Morning,

Another query for the fraternity....

I'm currently selling a car and have a potential buyer that I'm a little wary over. Not sure if I'm being overly cautious or if everything sounds kosher.

The car itself isn't the greatest example, priced at the lower end of the market.

I received a call from an interested party early last week, more interested in the price rather than asking questions regarding the car.etc
The person on the phone stated they would be purchasing on behalf of their client and the car would be shipped to Singapore.

Initially the offer was lower than I was willing to accept, they did come up a little but it was still to low. I stated I would think about it for a few days and get back to them - this was around 4 days ago.

This morning they have come back with an offer that I would possibly accept.
As I'm a little dubious over the conditions, I have asked what the procedure would be and if the buyer is fully aware of the cars condition / defects.
As the caller has stated he is purchasing on behalf of a customer, I have asked for his business / trading name so I can do a little due diligence.

The company is listed on Companies house with the director being the same name as the contact.
It does seem like a one-man operation, no website, company address is a gmail account.

Caller has stated that if a figure is agreed, a low loader would turn up, car is inspected then payment made.

Not sure on this one.....

I got this far, yes it’s a scam.

Sounds pretty genuine, if all checks out ok and payment is received from a company bank account matching the same name etc

Have you expressed your concerns with the guy who's buying?

Im not sure, thats why I'm asking smile.

Seems the general consensus is to give it a wide berth.

I just questioned it as the company name does exist on Companies House established in 2013 - unless that doesn't stand for anything these days, or if he is using a company name that isn't actually affiliated.

Yes, read all that, I use to work with a guy that would buy cars for a client in Japan using this identical method

It could be a scam of course, but there are genuine sales like this that do happen, just need to be 100% sure it's not a scam!

Its not unheard of, a fellow dealer sold a 240z that went to Singapore and was all arranged through a middle man. That M3 could worth 10x what its worth here in Singapore.

This and him trying to negotiate on the price to me makes it less likely it's a scam

If he can provide you ID to say it's him and it matches the business / address, then again, more evidence it's genuine

Isn’t that how most secondhand cars are sold?

Certainly every one I’ve sold the buyer has turned up, inspected the car, paid me and taken the car away. My most recent sale last year, guy took it away on a trailer.

If they pay in full, where’s the scam?

Can you export a car to Singapore if it's over 3 years old? Didn't think you could.

They won’t allow the import anything over 3yrs old. Until it meets the requirements for a classic at 35+

Has the buyer confirmed what payment method they intend to use, that’s where any scam would originate?

Anything other than a bank transfer would be a red flag.

Unless I’ve missed it, what car is being sold? That might go some way to establishing how genuine things are.

I don’t think anyone in Singapore would go to this trouble for a £5k Corsa, for example.
