I currently have a 2017 Golf R estate, which is an all round great car. Practical, quick, decent on fuel considering what it is.
I have had the car coming on 3 years now and with it being at 17 plate, I am thinking it may be time for a change!
However, this is where I have a dilemma!

Ideally, I would like to stay with something equally as practical and roughly the same power but just perhaps slightly newer. Maybe even something slightly more comfortable!

I have toyed with the ideal of a bigger engine diesel estate - 330d / M340D / S4 Avant TDI but my commute to work is a total of 15 miles per day and maybe 1 x trip a month on average of around 60 miles.
So diesel will more than likely not be of any benefit for me!

I have been looking at various petrol options that have similar power etc and it seems I now have the below list in place!

B9 Audi S4 Avant
BMW M340i Touring
Merc C43 AMG Estate
(Potentially Tigaun R, Arteon R or MK8 Golf R Estate)

Ideally I would like to try another brand other than VW and the better engines, comfort and interiors of the Audi, BMW and Merc have me thinking!
I would have one of those over the listed newer VW's however another concern is fuel!
Yes, we don't buy these types of cars for the fuel, but as I say, the fuel in the R is decent for what it is and how I drive! (Around 24-28 MPG around town, 32MPG on a longer journey)
A main concern would be the fuel consumption during "normal driving" on the Audi, BMW and Merc.

Has anyone else been in a similar dilemma or have any of the above and can comment / help a guy out? The struggle is real!

I have toyed with the ideal of going GTI, MK4.5 Focus ST etc as ill loose the space but still nippy and arguably better on fuel being FWD, but after having 4 wheel drive, its not something I'm overly keen to give up!!

Appreciate any help / advice anyone can give!

That sums up the Golf R estate pretty well.

If I wanted a car to fit that description, with a bit of go, re mappable if you get bored, and without all the nannying modern cars have, then I think I'd go for a, Golf R estate.

Sorry, I'm no help.

All I can say is that I have a 335d ‘66 plate saloon, and, post-CoVID, I have done similar short mileages, with a monthly longer one (but perhaps longer than yours), with no DPF issues. So a 340d estate may be OK for you. Just depends if you like it, and whether you prefer high revs, high power, or low revs, high torque.
As for me, I can’t think of anything to replace my 335d; on paper, yes, but when I get back in to drive it, then no.

I think the M340i out of that list all day long, my neighbour has one red and it’s a great car. I thought the S4 is diesel?

If you are generally only doing short mileage most of the time, see if you can find one of the last C350e estates. (I think they were made up to 2019/2020)

I ran one at the same time as a Golf-R, and whilst the VW was a gnats chuff quicker, the hybrid Merc was brilliant fun... cost peanuts to run... but very quick. (Around 300bhp)

Might be too old now I guess... but very, very cheap motoring for 90% of your trips if you can plug in... and then a bit of a Q car for when you feel like it.

Leon Cupra ST, although appreciate its fairly similar to the Golf R and some may even consider a slight downgrade...
Or you could go for a newer Golf R Estate...

If you like a bit of character, the C43 wagon with the optional Performance Exhaust is a cracker.

NB, it must be the S205 model, ideally a 2019-2021 facelift.
The newer (from late 2021) S206 is a 4-cyl mild hybrid and a disaster - I have the former but have done 2000 miles in the latter.

I have the same thoughts - I have had my 2019 Golf R from new and its been great but what to replace it with - the only downside is that the state of the roads where I live are not good and I have broken several wheels over the last couple of years and I would prefer something that can deal with the potholes
I did wonder about the T-Roc R or maybe a Macan but have not had any test drivers

Broken several wheels?Maybe not so much the state of the roads? I used to do 30k plus a year including traveling down off road rail access tracks six nights a week, never came close to breaking a wheel?
Don't see a Macan being any help, possibly a unimog or a fordson?

I've got a 2016 Golf Alltrack.

It's fine.

A 2017 Golf R and you "need" to change it as it's 2017?

If it was a 2007 Golf then it may be worth upgrading..2017 though?!scratchchin

How many miles a year have you done in your car? - if up to 8k a year then you really aren't going to see much difference in fuel costs between the R and something with a bigger capacity and/or more power.

340i and C43 were the first things to spring to mind.

I’ve a c43 estate, previously had a c43 saloon. I rate them (obviously) they are quick, comfortable, easy to drive and discreet.

Fuel wise my 66 saloon beats the 19 estate I have now but I still get 35+mpg in mixed use.

I’m keeping this one for a while and will treat myself to a 911 as my next car.

I had a 2019 Golf R (hatch, not estate), until it got stolen. Have now had a BMW M340i touring for over a year and I love it. It's quick, comfortable on horrid north London roads and practical. I get approx the same miles/gallon that I did with the Golf, mainly a few local roads and A roads/M ways.
Get a test drive and see what you think.

Thanks for all the replies folks, very much appreciated!

I know some were saying why change with it being a 17 plate. Long story short, iv had the car 3 years and I have never had a car longer than 3.5 years for various reasons. That being said, I am in no massive rush to change as in the grand scheme of things the R estate is a great car as I've previously said!

This post was so I could get a good idea for when I do change, be this soon or not.

Again thanks for all the replies, looking like it may be worth waiting for an M340i with the right spec to pop up at some point.
I actually had an M340i saloon last year on a 2 week hire after someone went into the back of me and I must say it was my first time driving one and it was superb!
