Ok I know these are getting on a bit but I really want to scratch a V8 itch.

I narrowed down the W212.
Got to boys so narrowed the E class down as I’m 6ft 2 and when I sat in a C class with the seat how I wanted it space in the back was limited so ruled out C63 W204 for that reason even though I love the 6.2 V8 sound.

Searching the classifieds I found 2 out of 90 odd e class that have rear TV screens and wondered is it worth it for the kids when going on a long drive?

These 2 cars?

Doesn’t have to be an estate by the way.
I have looked at S class as well they look a bit big though.

Thanks.

When my kids were small I had some (non-OEM) screens fitted and they were fantastic on long journeys. These days they just wedge their phones in the gap under the headrest and seem quite happy with that approach.

I like the front end of the white facelift one but, overall, prefer the earlier one in grey; my favourite colour on one of these behind tanzanite. Also, that one looks like it has Distronic (adaptive cruise) as it has the dark panel in the grille; that's a great option. and the rear blind; handy for the kids in hot sun.

Also, I'm not 100% sure about the coilovers on the white one; IIRC these ones were steel at the front and air at the back. If you ditch the air I guess you kill the self-levelling (?)

You can buy a holder for Ipads etc which will be much better than the screens.

Thanks I didn’t think about that.

Just saw one with a screen and thought “yeah that would be awesome”. I guess the technology in the screen in the Mercedes from that age is ancient now.

I wouldn't be surprised it it was DVD-based. The aftermarket ones I put in in 2010/11 were.

Whilst we're on the subject of ICE, you can converts Mercs of that era to full apps-in-the-dash with an Integrated Automotive unit. I stuck one in my 2010 E Class. It takes over the existing screen and you control it with the nudge wheel.

Oh I did see a w212 for sale that has Apple Bluetooth upgrade on the front screen.

Then use iPads in rear.

Always handy if you can find one that's already been done. Mine cost £750 fitted.

I wouldn't want rear screens at all personally, and I have two children myself.
I imagine the tech will be getting on a bit in those and simply giving the kids a tablet if they want something would be a much better option.

Right so ditched the thought of rear screens.

Narrowed down half a dozen on autotrader with prices between £22-£27k around 50k miles. Only looking at 2014 onwards ideally 15/16.

My mate has said w212/s212 are ridiculously expensive to run.
I do about 5k miles a year. All in (insurance, service, fuel, unexpected stuff) I was going to budget £5k a year?

Also doing my research I read about subframe issues?

I don't see W/S212s as being particularly expensive to run. I have an E500 from 2010. It's just shy of 90k miles and is in rude health. In the last 7 years it's had replacement air springs at the back and a starter motor. I had one small oil leak and one minor coolant leak. E Classes are used as taxis in Germany so the underpinnings are pretty tough. You get a bit on AMG tax on the 63's - front disks being one example - but a lot of it is shared with all the others. I took the previous one (211 E500) to 145k with very few issues.

I took my 212 to MB for a subframe check last year and got the all clear. The tech told me that MB will replace them FOC up to 20 years old. You have to pay for the bolts and they may telll you to do the brakelines at the same time (they corrode like on any car) but that's it.
