Mondeo Petrol (Hatchback/Estate)
Avensis Petrol (Estate)
Insignia Petrol (Hatchback/Estate)
Vectra Petrol (Hatchback/Estate)
Zafira Sports Tourer Petrol (Hatchback)

All vanilla cars, cheap to fix - all have big boots and any garage can turn a spanner on them.

Petrol for complete piece of mind in reliability stakes (less to go wrong), but forfeit higher VED.

For reliable i'd be looking at Kia, hyundai or toyota.

Toyota Avensis 1.8 Estate would be my go to based on these requirements.

Depends if you need the height of an estate, but the Octavia and Superb have a huge boot in hatchback form too.

I second a Skoda/Honda CRV
However at that money I'd go Jap and stick to the Honda CRV - the 2006 onwards shape can even have 2 storey boot for extra surface area

Saab 9-3, I had the 2.8 V6 and the boot was huge.

Something along these lines, only problem with this one is it falls into the higher VED - looks nice though.

Be careful with the Jap stuff for underbody rust. £4k limit is going to be 10+ years old for anything decent so check the MOT history for rot advisories before going to view to save you wasting your time. I've been looking for a CRV for quite some time around the same price limit and they're all gone or well established underneath on the sills and suspension mounts. To be fair, the non-Jap stuff is often just as bad - Ford, Vauxhalls on the sub frames in particular. In short : check the MOT history and take an old flattened cardboard box with you to lay on to have a good scout underneath it.

Skoda Superb
VW Passat
Mondeo

Estate option for each if you want to maximise boot space.
