I'm in the process of buying a new car privately and want rid of my current car quickly (Thinking WBAC or similar). The slight fly in the ointment is that my car is registered to my old address (always been a case of 'I'll do it later'). I still own the property but it's currently being rented out... I had thought that I'd just sell it with the old address still on there but I think this now might not be possible if i need to provide a proof of address... If I update my V5C now, it'll take a fair while for the logbook to come back. Have I snookered myself here?

If you still own the old house, then presumably you can provide proof that it's your address?

If you do the address update online, is it not just a matter of days for the V5C to come back?

Thats my most recent recollection anyway.

Takes 5 days to get the v5 back if you update it online.

Can't see it being an issue if you still own the property.

But could be wrong.

Do it on line its only took 5 working days when I did it the other week. The car i sold last Tuesday, I got the tax refund yesterday, and have already had an email from DVLA on Friday that the new car i bought on Thursday is registered in my name and the V5 should be with me soon.

I did not do the change for the new one the dealer did, but I guess there is a space to put your email in then get a notification the next day.

I'm not sure it matters?

If you sold it to WBAC they would probably do the change of ownership online there and then. The worst that will happen is that your tax refund and notification of the change of ownership will be sent to your rental property. Just ask your tenant to look out fir it and go pick it up.

WBAC will - usually - want to see proof its your car in your name and proof of address.

Put a royal mail redirection in place.

I think the issue is proof of registered address with WBAC / online buyers. They are very jumpy about ensuring the dont buy a car a trader is trying to get rid of so they do insist on all documents, ID and addresses aligning. Plus they'll want to see clear title etc (as well as the HPI checks), so not a car you're "selling for a friend" or may not actually own.

Well, they were when i last used them and i dont think they've changed.

What address is your driving licence at bank statement for? Same as the car?

For all those on tenterhooks, it really wasn't an issue. I am selling through Wewantanycar (quoted £1k more than WBAC). I just needed to show them my mortgage statement for my flat (where my car is registered) and my ID with my current address on it. No stress at all. biggrin
