So have paid a reservation deposit on an approved used Volvo 160 miles away, viewing and test driving the car on Friday and if everything is good will purchase through Volvo PCP to take advantage of 2 years warranty and servicing offer.

Dealer is keen for me to fill in finance docs before as they explained it could take some time to arrange on the day.

Are they stretching the truth on this?

The issue I have with this, if the car is not as described (I hope not) then I have a hard credit search on my file and then as I would continue the search would affect my credit rating for the small personal loan I was going to take out for another car purchase.

The credit check will, indeed leave a mark on your report.

However, fancy arriving at the dealership, loving the vehicle, and then facing a huge wait to know if the finance is approved. I've known acceptances within minutes, and some that take hours. They may be in the boat of not wanting to tie the salesman up for hours, if this time can be done in advance, approval gained, so that if your happy with the vehicle, you can take it there and then.

If not, how about viewing/demo, happy, fill out finance proposal, and then arrange another time to collect the vehicle? Saves the dealership having a salesman tied up, and means you don't need to worry about timings.

Thank you, that is what I was fearful of, so am now looking at how to go and view the car.

They might be trying to work out how serious you are & whether you actually want to buy their car or if you've got reservation deposits on another 2 or 3 cars.

I’m not sure I would overthink this.
If you think your credit is fine then I would just rock up as planned and hopefully the car will be as described and you can then say yes and go through the finance details.
I wouldn’t do this at say 5pm next Friday but in the am should be ok.

Pretty much this, getting finance acceptance is taking alot longer now in general, sometimes it can be accepted instantly, sometimes a few hours, sometimes it can roll into the next day, the dealership just want as much in place as possible to run as smoothly as possible for both themselves and you.

They're not stretching the truth about it taking time.

If you want to drive away same day, you really need to have everything lined up. I bought an AUC from another manufacturer with cash and had to transfer the money before I'd even seen the car in the metal.

Key is to ensure you're happy that the car is as described before you get there - get them to do a video or something - everyone has mobile phones with this capability.
Make sure you're clear on what your expectations are to them - I sent an email to the salesman explaining what standard I was expecting - i.e no noticeable scratches on the paintwork, pristine alloys, paperwork all in order, etc, etc.

They happily replied confirming - they don't need the hassle of selling a car to someone and then unselling it or taking it back.

Going to suck up the 7 hour round trip today, the dealership are quite happy for me to put another 500 miles on the p/x car!
