F31 335d to C7 S6 - would I be mad?
Discussion
Hi All,
I’m currently running an F31 335d with 83k miles. It’s been great; reliable, fast, reasonable to tax, service and insure. It’s currently under a BMW comp warranty that hasn’t been needed but nice to have in the background.
My wife and I have just had another child taking the rally up to two (no plans for more) and this has given me an idea of getting a bigger car to cope with all the crap that goes with having a newborn. (We also have dogs that need to be transported).
I’ve found a nice S6 locally, slightly older than my BMW but 50k miles. It is a nice spec and has good service history. I would love to go back to petrol and a V8 is very tempting.
However I just don’t know if I’m really going to be getting a significant amount extra for the £8k or so extra I’m going to have to throw at it. Also increased running costs… also of which are affordable but unsure if justifiable. We could get by with the BMW as the wife has a giant VW Tiguan allspace that can be used, however I much prefer a car than an SUV to drive…
Has anyone made a similar change and it was worth it? Or should I be boring and enjoy what I have?
Thanks

A few years ago now I sold my 159 3.2 V6 for a F34 330d which was quick, competent and soulless. After a couple of years I was hankering after petrol and chopped it for a Ghibli V6 S (petrol) which made every drive an occasion. I certainly never regretted my choice.I’m currently running an F31 335d with 83k miles. It’s been great; reliable, fast, reasonable to tax, service and insure. Is it an estate? I'd be tempted if it is. That generation of S6 is a very reliable car and you can buy Audi extended warranty if you feel you need it. The Audi has an incredible ability to waft effortlessly and when you're loaded up with kids and dogs that's far preferable to a sporty drive.
The 3 series will feel cramped in comparison. My A6 has carried everything from bookcases to sheds with a variety of child paraphernalia in between. No chance my old 3 series could have done that and dont underestimate the convenience of chucking everything in the back rather than having to plan how it all fits in. In the end that's the question you need to answer, can you fit everything in a 3/C/A4 sized car or do you need to go a model up?

If it weren't for the Tiguan Allspace I'd say keep the BMW. I've moved back to petrol (supercharged S4 Avant) and I'll never go back to diesel. You'll look forward to getting into the S6 V8 every time and the economy hit will be worth it just for the exhaust note alone, never mind higher revs, refined idle etc.
