A family member needs a new car. They've made the odd disastrous car purchases in recent years, need a little help and do not have all that much to spend. One of those situations where I'd perhaps be best not getting involved but have been asked to help. It needs to be a reasonable size in terms of carrying a fair bit of stuff from time to time. I have suggested a lot of cars that I would consider sensible, but maybe unfashionable, safe bets. They seem keen on an audi avant of some flavour but there appears to be nothing around locally that looks a good option and to be honest, although I haven't said so, I don't necessarily think that's an especially sensible route to go down.

Anyway, I had a quick scour of some the usual sites and about the only thing that seems to be of interest to them of stuff I've found is this Leon Estate. I've not spotted any obvious alarm bells. Looks an okay price etc. I think they're £0 road tax and a diesel would generally suit this use case. Min journey lengths tend to be well over 10 miles.

Anything to be wary of here other than usual used car sensible checks?

I guess it's worth asking if there is anything else he should look at but it's always difficult with these things as personal taste seems to be playing a big part. I've suggested quite a few perhaps dull japanese and korean options and a nice looking Duster 4x4 but none seem to appeal.

I had the 2.0 TDi FR 180 bhp. Went rather well. Any, I digress.

Check the rear lenses for condensation and the suspension for leaking fluid. I'd also check the engine bay hoses and flywheel function. Usual other diesel checks apply, e.g dpf etc.

Injectors, egr, clutch would be the main ones on these. Oh and leaking shock absorbers

Thanks both. And apologies for the spanner fingers on the title.

I'll take a good look at the shocks then. Any obvious tell tales for injectors and EGR?

You wont know injectors are on the way out until youre sat on the hard shoulder because the thing is in limp mode. Ask me how i know.

My caddy had this engine and i fcensoreding loved it but it got wrote off and theres no way way id have another because youre buying something and pretty much waiting till it breakds down in my eyes because theyre renowned for it, i had 2 go in 3 years.

On the flipside a mate went against my warnings and got a 1.6tdi touran and over 20 odd thousand miles hes had no bother.

Its a definite no from me though.

Identical to my wife's car....had it 6 years now has 120k on the clock and not had a single problem and she loves driving it.........would definately buy another without any hesitation whatsoever.

eta I think £60 road tax but could be £35......but definately not £0.

My dad had the same engine in a caddy. He had an expensive injector replacement bill.

Yep i see loads of 1.6 injector issues on the caddy forums.

Its a when not if scenario.

And they are getting expensive to buy now as well.

Just done an injector on my FIL’s 1.6TDI (CAYC). £330 fitted using a refurbed injector from WTDiesel. FIL paid £850 for Skoda to fit the last one(!)

Having had a few golfs with this engine, the main issues I had were the injectors and egr. Map out the egr valve and that’ll save you a lot of money.

Would you Adam & Eve it.......yellow coil light just came on and went into limp mode (felt approx 20% down on power and revving higher on tickover).......... left fo 30 mins restarted and then drove home 20 miles without coming on again..............waiting for garage to diagnose it........Injector?

Sounds like when my egr went( could turn off and back on and drive trouble free for a bit) but cant remember if that brings coil light on or not. Definitely did when injectors went but it also idled rough, is it idling okay?

Idling high on tickover when light was on (about 1200) about 800 when off....notice fuel consuption on trip computer dropped drastically too.

ETA I'm leaning more to EGR now.
