Criteria:

1. Proper rear seats
2. No more than ten years old
3. Petrol
4. Automatic
5. sub 50,000 miles

The mileage thing is probably going to cause an issue. Am I being unreasonable making that one of my criteria.

I lack creativity so all I can really come up with is an S class. You seem to be able to get diesel ones within this price bracket, but petrol seems to be the issue.

If you can accept another 7,000 miles this 640i Gran Coupe is a nice option:

One year over your limit throws up an Audi A8:

Was going to suggest VW Phaeton, but no petrols available on Autotrader.

Also Skoda Superb Laurin & Klement:

Mondeo Vignale:

Luxury without the premium badge. My kind of niche.

There's 3 cars I've been driven around in where I always think they are comfortable. S class, E class with air suspension and a Skoda Superb airport taxi that mainly does 50k motorway miles a year.

The age thing is a bit of a catch.

As Toyotas probably last twice as long as any other luxury brand then you could stretch the age and get a Toyota Century biglaugh

I'd much, much rather have a 20yo Century over a 10yo S Class.

To meet your criteria I'd probably look for the best X351 Jag I could find for your budget.

Plenty of Lexus GSs for that budget - either the V6 or hybrid. Both should be refined and somewhat different to the minicab-spec Mercs or Skodas even if they are nice cars.

Thanks everyone. I'm actually in a Skoda Superb already, so looking to go "up" from that. The Volvos and Fords don't quite do it for me. The XJ/XF route is an interesting one as is something German. Toyota Crown is an unknown to me, so will look into those.

Keep 'em coming! if not new reccommendations, any good buys are very welcome.

It can't do unfortunately as they went out of production more than a decade ago, there won't be any in the bracket he wants.

It's replacement was the S Class Coupe but I cannot imagine there are any of those at this price.

BMW 7 series would be the choice for me, not many to choose from in the criteria specified though

G30 5 series? a 530i in SE spec is a very comfortable car.
