Well, this is embarrassing.

While dragging myself around the tennis court in the sun, I looked at my Porsche and realised that I couldn't be arsed to drive it.

It's not that I'm bored of it. Far from it. It's still an occasion to get into, even just sitting in it on my drive. And I do enjoy driving it... when I'm in the mood... but you have to be in the mood. At least that's how I feel. I'm very aware that many people say it's boring compared to other cars of this type! But boring is not a word I'd use to describe the feeling when I'm in the mood to drive it. It feels connected to the road, I feel like I'm actually driving it. I feel alive. And yet...

I just find it tiring to drive. I know it's supposed to be the "everyday supercar" but it's too low, the suspension is too firm, the steering is too heavy. Just as well I bought the automatic version!

On the other hand, my low-slung TT is far easier to drive and therefore far more enjoyable. It does lack a sense of occasion, of course, but if I had to commute every day to work, I'd be choosing the TT every time. I guess I sensed this 8 months ago when I picked up the TT.

In other words, I'm finally admitting I'm getting on a bit.

So here's the dilemma. I would like to try another "interesting" (not run of the mill) car and I would love to play with a Gallardo but if I had to drive it every week just to keep it running, I'm not feeling it. (Sorry, p4cks!)

I feel a little concerned that I might make a costly and tiresome mistake with my next car choice. Is a Ferrari California easier to drive than a 996 Turbo? What else should I consider for around that kind of budget? I'm not quite ready for the Jag XKR just yet! Maybe I need to get into a DB something or a Vantage instead?

Has anyone else experienced this? biggrin

Yup.

Bought myself a '16 plate Vantage V12S and used it as my daily, diid 12'000 miles in 18 months and moved it on.

Fancied a change as the 'lure' of the car had gone.

Lexus LC500!

Looks stunning, comfortable and a real sense of occasion with that V8. Also very day to day useable.

Turned round and said to my wife I think I prefer her 330e to my M2 now…….. I’m not even 30!

Found myself looking at Range Rovers during the week and honestly think I’m having a midlife crisis.

Hopefully sort myself out soon biglaugh

My 996 turbo was replaced with a V8 Vantage. It felt much more special to drive.

I had that moment about three years ago, driving back from a track day. I couldn't hold a conversation with the passenger, due to road noise and I thought, "that's me done with Porsche".

I sold my 997 GTS a few weeks later.

I know that feeling. For the last couple of years that I had my Murcielago, the only time it came out was for it's annual service and MOT. I just couldn't be bothered. At the time, I had a Cayman as a daily, but now that the Lambo has gone, the Cayman is sitting in the garage, and that's not getting used now.

I think living in the SE may have something to do with it, as the roads are always busy and instead of just going for a drive, you seem to spend most of your time stuck in traffic.

People laugh when I mention I sold my 488 as I never used it when my daily Polestar 2 was so much easier to use.

Not quite at the same car level, but have a manual Boxster in the garage and last week had a journey that was just made for this car!

… but I took my partners 330d.. better phone tech, more comfortable, climate control is better, less of a hassle to drive, gets double the mpg.

I’m still ashamed of myself.

I think it happens to all of us, i currently have an Elise and im not getting the urge to use it really. I do seem to be going more toward comfort and ease of use now im just over 50.
Not sure where i will go next to be honest, fancy an Auto Bmw that i could use daily but not sure which one.

I have to second this, for me it's a Japanese version of Maserati GranTurismo which is a car I'd buy over the California everyday of the week

At the age of 52 I've just bought my first mx5. It's sort of a daily which consists of commuting around 80 miles a week with just me in the car. What I do like is that it's actually very easy to drive being modern with decent tech. Doesn't feel like a chore (I've only had it a few days though!).

Must admit I do also enjoy driving my wife's car which we use as our family motor. Its erm... a Hyundai ix20 1.4! Not a car for the average PH member at all. But it's roomy, you sit quite high, it's quiet, controls are effortlessly light and the suspension is soft. I never feel the urge to drive it in a hurry although the little petrol engine is actually sweet and willing.

As long as you have another car available I think something sporty is nice to own. Obviously things like Lambos and Ferraris are in a different league to my mx5. But having said that, the Mazda isn't really costing much if it doesn't get used a lot.

You are not stuck in traffic - you ARE traffic.

Personally it’s the state of the roads, just abysmal.

I think this thread's a good example of how Pistonheads' biggest threat is its core demographic dying out.

I had that thought a couple of years ago after a succession of V8 BMWs and a 997 (and long ago daily driving a Caterham so I’m no stranger to masochism.)

Bought a rapid EV which is miles better as a daily driver and with the money saved on petrol I get to keep the 997 for weekends which is what it’s best for. Using it sparingly I appreciate it all the more, but for the daily commute the EV is lovely!

It's good to know that I'm not alone in my thinking on this. I thought I was just being lazy or something.
