This is a big ask and I think I've been over most of the options but you never know.

I don't mind age of vehicle as long as it is (or could be made to be) reliable. Budget to say £30k but ideally less.

I would like a small, so 4.6m or less, family vehicle. I'd like some ground clearance and 4wd.

I'd like it not to be too agricultural, bear in mind our current drives tend to be 300bhp+, but I'd quite like 40mpg.

It needs to do 2 hr motorway trips and little country tracks equally well.

7 seats would be useful at times.

So in short, small but big, quick and nice to drive but economical, 4wd and high(ish) off the ground.

Best so far runs from xd3, to a delica d5, sq5, disco sport (2.2 only).

I'd like a small range rover with a decent petrol engine but I'm not sure an evoque cuts it. The new Jimny fits some criteria as does a 3.7 inifinit ex.

Toyota FJ Cruiser is a bit big, ml55 a bit old and juicy. G wagen would be good but not in the right price bracket.

Happy with jdm .

So any other ideas I've missed.

Just to clarify I do realise I want my cake and eat it but you have to try!

Neither the MINI nor the Evoque are big inside.
Basically a Škoda of suitable flavour would be best for internal space in a minimal footprint.

You’ll have to compromise on something.

I’d bin the 40mpg criteria.

F-pace 3.0d...you'd have to forego the 7-seats though.

Yes, it's going to have to be something. I think even with an unlimited budget there isn't much else.
F pace I hadn't looked at or if I can't find an xd3 then a 335d x3 is sort of similar.

Jaguar i-pace with air suspension.
400bhp, fantastic drive, capable off road, great interior, although no 3rd row of seats.
I get about 100miles for £2.50 charging at home on Ovo charge anytime.
If fully electric and the range works for you, with occasional public charging on longer journeys.

Could get one of the estates with seats in the back

Or something a bit nicer/ newer like an A4 Allroad or V60 Cross Country giving decent ground clearance/ AWD

Interesting, not seen one of those. Thanks.
I dont think I'd risk all electric, infrastructure where we go isn't ideal for it. I'd look at a xc60 twin engine t8 but I can't find out exactly how it works and even volvo can't tell me.
