Looking to purchase a 2020 Carolla Hybrid for the Mrs. 54k miles. Have found a decent one approved used. Only thing bothering me is the service history. Sales rep told me they should be serviced at 10k and 30k. This one was serviced at 20k (late) and 42k (again late). First one at Toyota, second one at a random garage.

He said I 'should' get the full Toyota 12 month used warranty and then as long as I have it serviced at Toyota until it's 10 years old or 100k miles, I'll get the full Toyota warranty.

It's the service at the random garage that's bothering me and the fact they were both late. Are Toyota likely to use that as a get out card if I have any problems in the future with it? It's a lot of money to us so I want to be sure.

TIA.

How can it qualify for the Approved status if it doesn't comply? Ask him to show you what the parameters are for a car to qualify?
Doesn't sound encouraging and I would by default not trust the salesperson.

Ask them to put it in writing, I went to buy a Toyota last year in Cambridge and the salesman said something to me which I was convinced wasn't correct so I asked him to put it in writing, he went away for quite some time and then came back and said he was unable to do so, I then thanked him for his time and left.

IIRC some manufacturers made exceptions for cars maintained under COVID. But as noted you want it in writing.

I believe this should have the "old" manufacturers 5 year warranty anyway so should be covered until next year, however the service intervals are every 10,000 miles so by my reckoning it should have had at least 5 services?
For me there are 2 issues -
1. Why would you want to buy a car that clearly hasn't been looked after.
2. Potentially certain warranty claims could be refused due to an incomplete service history.
My advice look for another one which has been serviced at the correct intervals I wouldn't trust the salesperson they have nothing to do with processing warranty claims

You need a letter from Toyota confirming the warranty will be honoured. Talk to service not just sales. When I spoke to Toyota recently about needing to slightly delay a service on my car due to being out of the country I was told one month/1000 miles would be considered an acceptable delay.

I was happy to take their word (email) on that, especially as my car is very low mileage but those are very late services and excess miles on the car you're looking at so I would be wary. Sales will unfortunately say anything to get the deal through as it won't be their problem later.

Bottom line is no-one on here including me decides this, hence my advice to get written confirmation from the company, and not the salesperson.

Toyota hybrids need a service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, alternating between major and minor. Anything else voids the warranty.

I’ve got one.

They were advertising not long ago that any Toyota qualified for this deal providing you had it serviced with them, applied to Lexus also, was a consideration when I was looking at LC500. I'd do some more research before writing off the car if I were you.

The salesperson is quite correct.Under this 10 year Toyota warranty,Toyota will automatically apply a full warranty as long as the car has just been serviced by a Toyota dealer, regardless of any previous servicing history. Then going forward as long as the car is serviced by a Toyota dealer another 12 months warranty gets added to 10 years old. So if the car is serviced at 9 years 10 months old, a year's warranty would still be applied to the car.
There is no snake oli here, just a very good warranty product, which probably no other car manufacturer is able to match.

MrsVS bought a Yaris hybrid 3 years ago which had missed a service. Just had 2 wheel bearings replaced under warranty at 6 years old. Basically 10 years 100,000 mile warranty regardless of previous history. As said previously really hard to beat.

My bold - that's not what my local dealer told me. The Service Manager rebuked me for a gap of 53 weeks between services (i.e. 1 week late but 2000 miles early!), but said it was still acceptable to continue the warranty. If I'd missed the service, however, it would have been end of warranty thereafter.

I'll confess that a) they're the worst dealer group I've had dealings with, and b) I haven't looked at the Ts & Cs so you may well be correct.

Good result.

However that doesn't mean that they'll systematically honour warranty claims irrespective of previous service history or lack thereof.

The dealer may not have checked or chose to ignore the gap and applied leeway (COVID ?).

What would be interesting is to know what the actual official and formal policy says.

I can't imagine an engine warranty being honoured despite a car missing 5 consecutive oil changes for instance but perhaps?

No way would I buy a car where the first service was 10K miles late, the second 12K miles late and is already late for what should be it's 5th Service.

Walk and buy another

It’s a buyers market, be fussy

Also consider the Suzuki version, they now offer a 7 year warranty

I went for a stroll on Sunday while visiting my parents, I walked down a street that had neighbouring houses both with Suzuki Swaces. I suspect this is the greatest density of such cars in the land biggrin

(I have noted before on here that my hometown is a hot bed of Suzuki ownership due to lack of main dealers for other brands)

Personally, if I was dead keen on the car I'd ask him to have it serviced as part of the sale, and provide written confirmation of the warranty extension.

To be fair though, that Relax warranty is bloody good. Our Corolla is just about to run out of the original 5 year warranty, but it'll be in for its next service just before that. We'll probably run it until it's up to 90k, then sell it with a year's warranty.
