What car conundrum
Discussion
In 4 weeks time my leased M135 will be returned. Before that I had a leased Mk7.5 Golf R estate and before that a leased Mk7 Golf R hatch. All cracking deals and the only new cars I’ve ever had. I’ve also had a 2007 Boxster S for the last 12 years or so.
I’m contemplating upgrading the Boxster for a 981 GT4/718 GT4 or 718 GTS 4.0. The 718 GT4s appear to be selling but the 981s seem to be struggling to sell. It’s a car I’d plan to keep for 10 years or so, at which point I’d be retired. The 981 appeals for its rawness given it wouldn’t be anything like a daily but it’s a lot of money for quite an old car and they don’t seem to be selling easily.
If I go that route I’d need a new daily and a Mk8 GTI Clubsport or m340i are the favourites. I’ve considered Fiesta/Focus ST, i20/30N, last 2 generations Civic Type R, Golf 7 TCR. Nothing really leaps out though and much as I liked my Golf mk7 Rs, the mk8 gets pretty mediocre reviews.
The other option is back to 1 car - used M4xDrive being the favourite but I’m nervous about how much they are still depreciating, even if I went for a £55k car which would be at the cheaper end of the market.
I could go for a used iD3 and GT4 I guess and it’s really just a commuting / short journey car I’m after for when I don’t want to use the GT4/ current Boxster. I’m also hoping some decent EV lease deals might come along (MG XPower!) as no one seems to be buying atm.
Sorry for the long post but previously I’ve always known what I was going to go for next…

Very hard one and a great conundrum to have! I’ll just float some ideas.
The Porsches are great choices and I think balancing it with a hot hatch for daily duties is good. I’ve drive the new Mk8 Golf R when it first came out and honestly I find it a nice evolution and a better drive but the interior quality is less than the Mk7 so don’t discount it out. As an alternative while no where near as good to drive as the Golf R but to cover the EV thing as well how about a used Tesla Model 3 £20-25k?
I haven’t drove an M4 only the new M3 Comp in saloon and honestly think it’s brilliant. Easy to live with and bonkers performance I love them.
Alternative to match the Cayman but also potential do the one car thing (if you get winter tyres) is try and get hold of an M2 CS. Depreciation doesn’t seem to bother them and it’s an Evo car of the year so fair to say it decent.
I don’t think you have a wrong option to pick here in terms of a drivers car more just if you fancy the 1 car or 2 car thing. I’d probably go the GT4 and a used Tesla.

Don't a hardcore-ish Boxster and a hardcore-ish hot hatch do pretty much the same job, other than being able to transport more than two people in most of the hot hatches?
I'd be inclined to have a bit more difference between the cars and get something more comfortable/cheaper as the everyday car, perhaps an EV as already suggested? I don't know if you have to worry about theft or supermarket car park dings, but if you do, then a cheaper car could have benefits there too.

Thanks for the comments!
I did search for an M2 CS a few days ago but there were only 2 listed iirc. I ruled out the Mk7 Clubsport S as only 2 seats.
Tesla is a very interesting thought - didn’t realise just how far they’d dropped in price. Also if my 4 years of wfh comes to an end (which has suddenly become a real threat) that would work well.
Theft and supermarket dings aren’t too much of a consideration. Basically I’m after something sacrificial (not something I will keep forever but will have to deal with salt riddled roads) but has to be a decent drive given I’ll be spending more time in it than a potential GT4.
