BMW x3 2d. Or x5 3d
Discussion
Hi I wonder if you could help me out.
Me & my wife are looking to buy a bmw x3d
As my wife has wanted one for a while now. We was going to look at a 2017 x line x3d with 60,000 on the clock with full bmw service history £14800.
But our niece has now just informed us she is selling ber x5 3d. They are the second owners off it & she bought from her boss who had it from new. & has every extra you can get on it again with full bmw history. & is willing to let us have it for less than what the x3 would be a lot less.
But our only concern is the running cost will be a lot more than the x3. Even tho we will be getting a lot more car for less money . Now we don’t know what to do! My wife does mainly town driven. Please help guys

Do they have the same engine? Overall, you probably want to just be considering what tax differences they have, insurance differences and if doing a reasonable number of miles, what the mpg difference means etc. I'd also take into consideration whether being larger is going to be less convenient for the way in which you use your car. For mainly town driving the smaller car is going to be better on paper but the offer of a known quantity can't be wholly discounted.
Plus, if the car is mainly to be used in town do you really want to be considering a diesel anyway given the way local urban councils are all having such cars in their sights for charging and inhibiting?
The X5 is definitely a bigger car and more refined than the X3.
Saying that, it is heavier and therefore will consume more diesel/ brakes and tyres.
As a previous poster mentioned, consider the insurance and also your use and choose the car which suits your use rather than buying price.
Good luck with your choice.

If they've both got the same engine running costs will be very similar at which point I'd take the X5.Me & my wife are looking to buy a bmw x3d

Hi the x3 will be 2littre the x5 is a 3 littre.
Done an insurance quote the x5 is double what the x3 is, & tax is nearly double. I’m thinking the x5 is gonna to be all round more. Even if I get it cheaper. Plus like said if something goes wrong with the x5 will be awkward with family
Check replacement tyre costs also. BMW do like unnecessarily wide rubber on their cars. Done an insurance quote the x5 is double what the x3 is, & tax is nearly double. I have an X3 20d, bought new and now had it for 9 years and 100k
It’s averaged 42mpg over that time in mixed use and apart from routine servicing and wear tear items it’s needed nothing
It runs on 18’s which aren’t too expensive despite being a slightly unusual size and they last very well
It’s EU6 and doesn’t have adblue and has had zero DPF issues
Quality wise it’s a step up from the F31 3 series and more akin to a 5 series (had a F31 320d alongside it for 4 years and 120k)
Size wise it’s just about perfect being very similar to the original X5 in size
The fact I’ve had it as long as I have is testament to just how good an allrounder it actually is
