G20 M340i or G05 X5 M50D - Sedan vs SUV
Discussion
Hi guys,
My X3 M40i recently got written off thanks to a drunken swine rear-ending me. We are looking for its replacement.
Has anyone here gone from an X5 to a M340i, or from a M340i to an X5? More specifically the X5 M50D? This will be a one-car garage for at least 2 years.
To paint a picture of the driving profile, along with our X3 getting written we are moving back to South Africa for business, we will be doing 1600-mile round trips once maybe at the most twice a year. The rest of the year will be short commutes, shops, school etc. In the UK we literally used the utility of the X3 once going to the tip...the rest of the time I found myself missing a sedan/hatchback form factor as you can feel the weight in the X3.
We don't get the X5 40i in SA, or it may have been considered, and the M50i is still a bit too expensive to warrant the extra ££. The M50D although diesel seems to be the best value for money at around £42.5k - CPO BMW around 35k miles (In South Africa) in terms of X5. M50i comes at around £53-54k for similar spec and mileage which puts it just out of budget.
2020 M340i CPO BMW - 18k miles £32k.
Now to elaborate on my 2 choices which are firmly in very different directions. I enjoyed the X3 M40i, however, there was no escaping the fact that it was an SUV as you could feel the body roll, it was fast in a straight line, capable, and had adequate space. I found myself longing to be back in the drivers seat of the S4 even with the terrible throttle lag. But it was a trade-off between myself and the wife, she wanted a fully fledged SUV I wanted a performance car as a daily driver (not a fully M car). I would either want one or the other, the X3 was an in-between and although it was good, it was neither a full sized SUV nor a performance car, more of a jack of all trades.
This leads me to the 2 avenues I present before you...What would you guys suggest? Would the X5 M50D scratch the performance itch and be a good daily...or rather go M340i and if anything needs collecting just get it delivered?
If we take the M340i for £32k we can get an F15 X5 30D (£16-17k) in around a year as a proper SUV and then have a 2 car garage.
Your opinions would be greatly appreciated

Represent the zef side instead My first thought was "get the X5, you can shift stuff", but as you are happy to get stuff delivered and you are living somewhere that's an option, then the 340i will be fine and more fun. You can't beat physics, high CofG and more mass will always be awkward. With the 3er you'll save a bit on fuel which will offset delivery costs. Is the estate an option? That's a best of both worlds. Or you could even get a cheap bakkie for errands if you find you need to move stuff more regularly.
