Looking to change our car, currently got an MG HS as we have been doing our house up etc so sold my RS3 a couple of years ago and bought that on a cheap deal.

Currently a 1 car household which has worked fine, so looking to change the MG to something nicer again this summer as I am bored and miss having some BHPs.

Not really bothered about it being practical as no kids, but do a lot of motorway miles so would like something not too small.

Any thoughts on a car that will hold its value better than others doing 15-20k miles per year and not ruinous running costs? Ideally with a bit of poke too.

Top end budget I’d say around 30-35k

Cheers

At the lower side of your budget you can get a nicely spec'd S3, certainly a step down from an RS3 but with a stage 1 tune they're great little cars and can still give you a comfortable high 30's mpg for the longer motorway jaunts.

An M4 coupe with most of the toys is another nice place to cover some miles, whilst also being able to give it a good push when you want to.

A little more left-field but certainly interesting would be an RC-F, bulletproof in terms of reliability, fairly good on depreciation and still can make a nice sound if given a little love.

Other than the usual M4/M3/C63/C43/S5 etc, some other options...

Giulia Quad

V8 F-Type

Granturismo

S500

Some of the stuff that won't depreciate as bad is probably worse on the MPG, and potentially comfort, like older M3's, W204 C63, lotus etc.

Your annual mileage is always going to be the biggest issue when it comes to depreciation there's no way around it.

My pick would be either the Mercedes E400d:

Or the diesel S4 whose 3.0dh drivetrain is only bested by the Mercedes above:
