Replacing Mx5 with a dog friendly estate.
Discussion
A month a go we got our first dog, it's going great and were enjoying our long walks.
However it's introduced a little bit of a problem with our cars. Got two cars, a Skoda Yeti 4x4 TDI and a 1999 Mazda Mx5.
The Yeti has been doing all the dog transporting work as it's a great dog car, however the Diesel with DPF isn't too happy about the continuous short journey a few miles to and from Cleeve common.
I should add that I ADORE the Yeti, it's an absolutely fantastic car. The Mazda I bought as a project car that was always going to be a bit ropey.
So my immediate thought was maybe I need to chop in the Mx5 for a petrol estate car, something that's powerful, a bit fun but plenty of room for dog that can do the short trips with ease.
I've been in a debate with myself for a few weeks now whether I'd really regret selling the Mx5, It's on Coilovers w/ a full suspenion rebuild and the rust has only recently been sorted, so it's a pretty tidy example that drives really nicely.
But I could equally replace it with a fast(ish) estate that would still be quite fun to hustle along.
So far I've been looking at:
>Saab 9-5 HOT
>BMW E39 Touring
>BMW E46 Touring
>Volvo T5 Estate
Other considerations include some hot hatches like the FN2 Type R.
I've also been offered a 1996 Suburu Legacy GT-B Twin turbo estate import for £1500, although its been in a garage for 8 years and needs a tidy up and an MOT. 300BHP and manual gearbox sounds like a lot of fun, but could be a money pit.
Budget is around £3000 as I want something of near equal value to my Mx5.

The issue with E46's and E39's are, while mechanically pretty simple, you're gonna have similar issues with rust chasing now, as they're getting on a bit. They're mechanically pretty simple compared to cars of today, but obviously going to cost more to keep on the road than the MX5. Unsure if you could get an E91 for 3k but that's where I'd be heading.
I had an FN2 and it was a great car. Stiff, but alot of fun to drive and they handle really well. Obviously not an estate but more practical than an MX5 and the boot on those is pretty big. Depends on how much additional space you're after really.

Why not replace your diesel Yeti with one of the petrol engine ones?
A Yeti is a do it all car!
The sensible thing to do. Or maybe an Octavia VRS estate. I bought my current 320D for dog duties but cover the mileage on a daily basis to warrant a diesel. Loving the 7-800 miles brim to brim fill ups. Only thing is the boot isn’t that wide, so the crate I have that fitted perfectly in the Legacy estate won’t fit between the arches in the BMW. A Yeti is a do it all car!
