So I'm in the market for a new car. I currently drive a BMW e82 120d stage 1 223bhp.

Looking to go back to petrol and 4 door.
Thinking 3 series or a 4 series gran coupe, but am little bit worried about the 2.0l in the 330i and 430i. Have always heard 6 cylinder engines are the way to go with bmw.

Insurance prices being the main thing putting me off a deisel. Currently paying about £600 a year for the 120d. Had a few quotes for 330d and 430d some coming back as high as £1700 a year!
440i was £900 a year.
430i about £800 a year.

I'm guess I'm looking for advice on any of these models and mainly the b48 engine found in the 330i and 430i, are they reliable? Heard the n20 that was before the b48 had some issues. Are the 340i and 440i considerably more to maintain and fill with fuel than the 440i for example?

My budget is about £15000 so if going for 340i/440i there won't be many around in my budget and would likely be higher mileage. What is considered high mileage for a petrol bmw these days?

Any help much appreciatedsmile

I was thinking the same, seen some around £16/17k but pushing the 100k mark which is a little high I think. £20k will be a stretch for me right now, could probably get to £17k but would like to keep a couple spare pennies in case

I would love the performance of the 440i, but trying to be sensible as I don't need it, and trying to stay in budget.

250bhp would probably be lowest I'd like to go, as I will miss the torque from deisel and at about 230bhp now. I'm guessing 3 and 4 series are quite a bit heavier too.
Not sure what the 330i is like to mod, but I'd likely not do much more than a stage 1 map and little bits maybe stage 2.

Unfortunately the 330i and 430i seem to be quite rare, not seeing any in the newer shapes with the updated interior etc. I've drove a 430d from 2015 and it did feel a little dated. Only found one 330i in the newer shape, in budget but wasn't an m sport model frown

I did look at the 330e, but heard horror stories about batteries, no idea how true they are though. I may do a few insurance quotes. 400bhp is crazy from a stage 1!.
What is considered high mileage on these petrol engines?

Quotes came back quite high on the 330e too unfortunately. Around £1400 a year. Not sure why it's so high? 32 years old, 10 years driving, 9/10 ncb no points.

Complicated hybrid system with expensive parts if it needs to be repaired? Also insurance prices generally up across the board

Yeah that makes sense I guess. Maybe I'll have to stick to petrol for now then. Not worth paying 600-1000 a year more insurance in my opinion.
