Qashqai is the 1.6 petrol that drinks like a fish but moves like a sloth the 1.2 petrol is awful and will burn as much oil as fuel.
Or Rav4, or Kuga.

Older Lexus RX may be in budget?
Prob not what you're after but might be a fun alternative choice:

Real economy figures are 30 to 35mpg if driven carefully. Easy to get in to the 20s if you have a heavy right foot. Known for being very reliable - however if something does go wrong, it won't be cheap to fix.

What's 'good mpg'?
Depending on what kind of driving you do, you can find a lot of petrol SUVs thirsty.
They don't have great aerodynamics on the open road.
My friends Honda CRV hybrid was good on fuel all round, but they're £15k and upwards?
40+ on average. I would say thats good Depending on what kind of driving you do, you can find a lot of petrol SUVs thirsty.

TY hadnt thought of a Kuga. BUT according to Honest Johns mpg they arent exactly that good MPG wise. Dont like CR'v's at all. CX 5 has good MPG and quite big. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202401306...

I was going to say they won’t be under £10K yet, but there you are. That Ateca does seem cheap though. The early 1.5’s had engine hesitation issues, most noticeable in manuals. Seems the DSG versions mask it. Not sure when that was sorted. Wife has a 22 1.5TSi DSG Karoq - runs well and it’s same economy as the diesel Tiguan it replaced.

I am selling, or to be more accurate, trying to sell my Subaru. It has so much power....237 bhp, it could rip the tarmac of your road BUT I get well under 30 mpg for how I use it and thats not good enough, so wish to get something similar but with an MPG closer to 40......and lower tax as well! hence, Yetis, Qashcows etc...I read Honest Johns reviews as they also have owner reviews which can be brutal. The Kuga as mentioned earlier get mid low 30's an an example....The CX 5 isnt that bad TBH....

Out of interest, what sort of economy? My sister has a 1.5TSI in her Formentor and I was absolutely shocked at how rubbish the economy was. Even on a run, 300 miles each way, it was only returning 35-37.5 mpg. That was quite sedate driving too. I'm convinced my 2.0TSI could have beaten it on the same trip in terms of MPG.
I spreadsheet its fuel use - average since we got it is 38.5MPG. Looking at Tiguan's spreadsheet it was 38.91MPG - to be fair, Tiguan was 4Motion, which is supposed to knock 10% off, and it had winter tyres half the year. Both cars are DSG.Brim to brim in local (we live in a semi-rural area) use, which is typically 4 miles each way to shops, or grandchildrens schools etc, lowest ever was 33, but it's usually 36-39.
I've used it a couple of time for long (200 miles ish each way) trips down South and it was showing mid-50's on the display - but I put it in eco mode. Without doing that it seemed stuck at low 40's (only occured to me to switch half way through the first trip). It can spend quite a bit of time in 2cyl mode when cruising. I always get better MPG than wife does - she drives fairly quickly and in a very binary way, she's either accelerating or braking.
Looking at Tiguan forums, some people get terrible MPG out of the 2 litre petrols - talk of MPG in the low 20's around town. Which is a shock for them as they're usually switching for a diesel.

My wife had an Ateca 1.4 TSI manual for a while, it did an easy 45+ mpg on a motorway run, 50 was possible at around 60mph. She now has a Golf Mk7 with the same engine but DSG and that gets around 50-55 with the same driving conditions.
It's a decent unit the 1.4 TSI, a bit strained at higher rpm but for a daily they're good.

They're decent for what they are (as in size power etc) the smaller engines really aren't much better real world, CX-5's aren't massively better especially around town.Edited by romft123 on Monday 1st April 09:45
Personally workout what SUV suits you best as the difference in MPG will be small compared to having the right car.
