Difficult one. I was in the exact same boat 6 months ago.
My criteria was and always is - private buyer, full annual history (as a indicator of how the owner views the car). I.e. not someone who waits until something wears out or breaks before spending anything. Those sort of cars show the lack of love.
It was either a 2.0l diesel Octavia or Japanese something.
Sadly a 2012 50k miler Mondeo 2.0TDCI (the PSA engine) came up. I'd like to get rid of it but I'm struggling to find any reason!
Edit one of the tyres slowly let's it self down over the space of two weeks.

Basically want a lot of boxes ticked.
Petrol, cheap to run, room to sleep in and roof rack capabilities for a MTB.
Highest mpg possible, low tax. Realible.
What can you suggest?
I’m into my car camping and have slept in my Mercedes Citan in Spain, Portugal and have done the NC500 in it. It’s as ugly as sin but perfect for trips and MTBing etc.Petrol, cheap to run, room to sleep in and roof rack capabilities for a MTB.

If you can cope with the looks how about a Leon estate? Think that’s what I’m having next.
I car camp in my Dacia Logan, room for two, loads of space for 1. Much bigger load area than cars the next size up. I have the 0.9 turbo petrol which is economical and sprightly enough. I went for a top spec Stepway, but there are plenty of lower spec cars in budget.
I'll be using it up in Galloway forest next week. Have boot canopy that is great if you are at a spot for a couple of nights.

A roof tent (or just a regular tent) and a towbar mounted bike rack opens up a lot more option.
Petrol and high MPG sounds like misery to me.
A D5 equipped V70 would be far superior and would cover the all other criteria with ease. I'm 6'1" and I could sleep fully stretched out without touching either end. Load bay is flat too, I've had worse hotel beds.
