Looking at now parting ways with my RS4 Avant B8. Now needing something a little bit more economical due an increase in weekend motorway driving but would still love the character, practicality and performance of something a bit newer. Budget around the 30-35k mark. Have I missed anything obvious apart from the usual M340i's?

Cheers in advance

With that sort of budget why not get a cheap diesel for the commute and save the big car for high days?

In the household we've got a Peugeot 208 as a run around and an old Mercedes C200 estate as a workhorse so the RS4 is a bit of already a weekend toy but always handy to have the practicality of an estate. So just looking for a happy medium.

Golf R estate. Mine does about 50 mpg on a long run to Norfolk at 60.

Going of Honest Johns 25mpg for the RS4 and 30mpg for the M340i you might not save that much on fuel, maybe £10 a week.

Granted you might just want a more modern car but I think you’d be hard pressed to replace the RS4.

How many miles do you actually do in the RS4?

Many of these topics pop up about changing cars to save money. But most of the time the cheapest option is to run what you have. Unless you are going from a Dodge viper to an Aygo for example!

Even without yet knowing the miles you do I say keep the RS4 and enjoy it!

I agree with Keo - keep it.
My wife has a B9 version and every time I drive it think if we had to only have 1 car this might well be the right choice.

Appreciate the responses, done a little over 12k miles in the last year, not a huge amount of distance but around town im seeing around 180 miles out of a full tank (60L) and on the motorway around 250-280 miles. The increase of insurance and road tax to £670 isnt helping in it's justification. Plus I normally switch out cars every 2 years so i'm due a change. The Mercedes E53 (2018-) estate seemed like an ideal replacement but they don't seem to be a common car for sale on the used market atm.

It’s actually higher than 50mpg. On lots of local journeys it’s pretty much 30mpg I think.

I had the B9 S4 petrol variant (incredibly overlooked) and I could easily get 40+ mpg on long drives

Yup my wife had an S3 then an RS3 before the B9 and the S versions are certainly much more fuel efficient. They also sound decent enough which for her is important !

If you want something for longer runs then I'd suggest looking at the E400d ir's a very sweet drivetrain (I'm bias as I have one) you'll struggle to find an E53 in budget.
