My mk2 TT is finally giving up on me so it's time to chop it in for something else. My missus is adamant that we need more than two doors this time and something that's better on fuel. Given that I'm currently driving the 3.2 and averaging around 20mpg that shouldn't be too much of an ask!

She hates estates so that's knocked the idea of an s4 out of the water. I thought about a Ghibli but she isn't a fan either. We've test driven both a 16 plate Macan and 18 plate 530e. The 5 was probably more comfortable and quieter but the Macan felt more special inside we don't have allocated parking so wouldn't be able to charge the car everyday either.

I only threw the Macan into the mix as it was £200 a year less to insure than the 5 which was also cheaper to insure than the 3!

Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Budget is around 20k

Cheers!

I have a 330e and love it. However if I wasn’t able to charge it I wouldn’t bother with PHEV and I’d just go a normal 5 series.

What is your remit/requirements? Space? power? transmission? fuel type? body shape?

From your OP the obvious PH advice would be to change your wife but appreciate this may not be practical.

As someone who was looking for an S4 Avant but ended up with an S5 Sportback, which has pretty much the same size boot - provided you don’t load to the roof - how about a B9 S5 Sportback…?

My dad recently bought a B9 2.0 TFSI 252hp Quattro and even that’s enjoyable to drive, if you’d value a bit more economy over six-pot sounds.

You may dislike for the same reasons as the Ghibli, but a Levante?

I don't want anything that's massively slower than the TT I'm currently in so 0-60 around 6ish. The novelty of 20 mpg has worn off though so something that's a bit better would be appreciated!

The missus is happy to let me pick as long as it has auto box, 4 doors, isn't 'too old man/golf club' and nothing as big as an X5/Cayenne. That being said I'm not quite sure how a 5 series is fine with her but a Ghibli isn't...

We're hoping to expand the family from the two of us and a mini dachshund so decent boot space would be ideal.

It all rather depends on your budget.
The Alfa Guilia in 280 bhp 2.0T Veloce has decent poke and is a good drive.

Just thought I'd close this up. I've ended up with a 67 plate 530e I managed to get one for £14k with 71k on the clock. I didn't feel that I could justify another 5k for a 530d and once 14k seemed to be able to get me a decent car it felt silly spending anymore. The car I bought had the battery replaced last year and came with comfort pack, M Sport Pro pack, visibility pack, technology pack, parking assistant plus enhanced and front comfort seats which are a delight. I've managed to get around not having a drive to charge by using the ones at the gym and an agreement with my neighbour so I can charge at home as it only takes 2 and a bit hours for a full charge. Already missing 6 cylinders but getting well over double the mpg is softening the blow somewhat! Thanks for all the suggestions and help!

What sort of electric range are you getting? Seems like alot of very nice car for £14k.

I've got one the same year and mileage.

Up to 19 in the summer down to around 14 during the coldest spells.

Yeah I had a bit of a result, the guy was tired of paying £400 a month whilst living at his Dad's house with his missus and kid so just wanted the finance paid off with enough money left over to take his missus out for dinner, so he could start saving to move out.

The most I've charged it for is 2 hours and that gave me 19 miles at 90 odd percent. It drops a chunk if you have the aircon on. I managed to get 12 miles off an hours charge which was about 50% last night. That got me into work which is about 11 miles away and my petrol range even went up 4 miles.

I'm delighted with it to be honest. It feels a LOT bigger than the TT but the 360 cameras help massively with the parking!

A vote for the Macan.

My wife has the 2.0 petrol, so in essence it's just an Audi Q5 with a Golf GTI engine, not an obvious recipe for fun, but....

It is genuinely excellent to drive and even sounds great with the sports exhaust, great fun around a quiet B road.

Porsche just sprinkle magic on things. Even our old Cayenne with the 3.0D engine was great to drive.

Just check it has had the transfer box sorted, this is a timebomb (check forums), other than that they seem pretty reliable.

Congratulations on the new car, I looked at a 530e in the past because my commute is ridiculously short.

I was confused at this comment because the S4 also comes in saloon?

Cheers! Very much enjoying the ridiculous economy on it!

I only ever see the estates around me so stupidly assumed that it only came in that flavour!
