It seems there are two routes open to me:

1. Retain the plate for £80, refit the old plate, advise insurance company of change of reg, wait for the new V5 then sell it to one of the car buying franchises. Go out and buy a new car.

Q? Presumably cancellation of the policy might not be necessary, for a short period while a new car is purchased, if the plate is retained as there will be no car bearing the plate?

2. Trade it in against a new car. Do the garage sort out the plate in that instance or do I still have to put it on retention beforehand?

The garage will want the plate transfer done in advance.

They won’t want a car sitting on the forecourt they can’t sell because they’re stuck waiting on the transfer to be completed and the new V5 issued.

If you want to keep the plate it’s up to you to do it before you sell.

Just to add - are you planning on putting the retained plate onto the replacement new car and would this be a brand new car or used ?

My past experience has been exactly the opposite, traded in plenty with a private plate and garage are quite happy to wait. It’s all done online now anyway and new log book rarely takes more than 3 or 4 days.

The conversation I had went that whilst the process can be quick, it isn’t always and sellers can be very slow to then hand over the new V5 once it drops through their letter box.

I would always remove a private plate before selling a car, just adds extra hassle.

Would never want a scenario when a purchaser “thinks” they are buying a plate as well as a car
Despite all the disclaimers in the advert

Get it done before the car is up for sale…

Cleaner all around

In which case whilst you are still responsible for putting the plate on retention it could well be that the dealer might arrange the actual transfer to then the new car ie arrange physical new plates etc.
When u retain the plate do it online a few days before partex date and you are sent a certificate for the revised plate reg.
The new V5 for it normally arrives a few days post that.
Make sure insurers know what plate is on the new car when you collect it.
If you get timing right no need to physically change plates on the car going back.
Just make sure you carry the paperwork when you pick up the new car.

Question , if the car you are selling has an Mot do you have to do anything as the reg will not match?

No, the tax and MOT automatically change.

I did it yesterday.

Took my PP off one car that is at a dealer on SOR, paid the £80 and immediately pour it on my new car.
Really easy, all you need is the ref number form the V5.

Super simple and all online. They give you an
Online certificate you can use to buy new physical
Plates before your new logbook arrives as well.

That's what is SUPPOSED to happen. In 2019, I transferred a private plate off my TVR Cerbera and the VED status didn't change of course, but 2 weeks later, the car still had no MoT history. Eh?

I contacted DVSA (MoTs) who said it was DVLA's responsibility, who said, guess what? That's right, that it was up to DVSA. They pointed the finger at each other for some time. rolleyes Until I escalated and turned a bit angrier, nothing happened, but apparently it's just a few button presses to sort out. Took nearly 6 weeks before the MoT history came across from the retained registration to the correct one. grumpy

So I always check online after DVLA do anything, or don't do it if you see what I mean.
