Hello

Looking at options to replace our 2013 Nissan qashqai and these two cars look good options.

Looking at used and budget up to £21k. Ideally no more than 3 years old.

Out of the two cars which would people recommend? Or is there anything similar?

Many thanks

Really pleased with our XC40 T5 petrol. Seems to have traditional Volvo values and handles well.

Don't buy one with a manual gearbox.

Thanks both.

What is wrong with the manual gearbox version?

In terms of reliability and service costs are both similar?

Thanks

As others have said the Volvo is the more luxury car , however the the big touch screen takes a bit of getting used to. The CX5 is quite old fashioned simple to use controls etc and if you want a manual gear box car then I would recommend a Mazda.

If you go diesel Auto route - Volvo
Petrol Auto - Volvo
Petrol Manual - Mazda

If you want to keep the car for 10 years + then I would guess the Mazda will be your prove more reliable less to go wrong.

Both are Good cars

We had the same choice and went for the CX5, mainly on price. The XC40 has better a spec and feels more quality, although the later 2019 on CX5's aren't bad. We just couldn't justify the additional cost with the much reduced mileage we do since both WFH now. If you do go Mazda, avoid the diesel. The Facebook group is full of issues with it.

Thanks all.

Yes the Volvo is more expensive and prefer not to go too old. The 2021 Mazda’s look nice and think prefer the screen and dial set up over full touch screen for everything.

Are there any other cars I should consider?

Thanks

I was very wary of the touchscreen controls when I looked at an XC40 T5 recharge. The rest of the car impressed me so much that I bought it anyway.

Having spent an hour setting everything up on the day I got it, the touchscreen has proved to be a non issue. Climate left on Auto, it remembers the driver's seat and steering wheel heat settings, and there's enough physical buttons to control media playback.

The only time I use the touchscreen is for the satnav, and to use the Battery Hold function on longer journeys. Passengers soon learn how to switch on the front passenger seat heater, as it's always visible on the screen. Pretty much everything can be voice-controlled if you like that kind of thing (I don't).

The original "Sensus" touchscreen setup is very well designed, the current Android Auto system apparently has some issues - a "work in progress".

Volvo is plusher, with a badge and no doubt a more pleasant place to sit.
when I had a similar choice (though with an XC60) I chose the petrol auto cx5 for dynamics and a likely more gremlin-free experience. I have a few other cars, so this just needed to do a job. If it was a higher mileage main car I'd probably consider plush as being more important. CX5 does punch above its price though.

Oh, and Mazda allow you to switch lane-assist off. forever wink

The other car that we like the look of is the Peugeots 3008 and in particular a 2019 GT line with low mileage is around £16-17k.

Does anyone have experiences or views on these cars?

Thanks

No experience, but they do look really good. I see a couple on my dog walks. The newer Peugeots certainly seem to have gone up a notch.

Tests of that time said the 2016 onwards x1 was the best of the bunch.

We have a 1.5 T3 manual in the pool fleet and I’ve no issues with the gearbox, although I recall reading that the T3 manual originally had a different engine to the automatic and a few had bottom end failures before they all reverted to the automatic engine bearing configuration
