Been considering getting an Up! GTI as a runabout for low annual mileage, but considering alternatives that may be better value, maybe even an MX5, though I would miss practicality. What are some other popular options?

The Swift Sport always seems to get good write-ups.

Also, if your looking at MX5s, this generation of Toyota MR2 is said to be brilliant to drive

The Aygo/108/C1 triplets are cheaper and still fun in a small, relatively lightweight go kart way. If the Up! still appeals more but the GTI seems too much, the (rarer) 90ps engined version is still pokey and fun to chuck around.

I doubt any small will better value than an Up! GTi as the values of them are only going to up as they have identified as a genuine successor to the orig Golf GTi and they’ve stopped making them. I plan on buying one as soon as funds allow as a weekend/summer car, taking it off the road in the winters and keeping it forever.

The Up Gti looks really good.

I'm guessing you're looking at £10k plus as that appears to be the starting point for the VW.

Picanto 1.0 turbo looks fun and should surely be cheap to run.

It's slower than the Up though.

£10k is plenty enough for a mk7 Fiesta ST. I have an ST3 and it's excellent. Over the past 4 years it's been dirt cheap to run. Being a Ford it's fairly cheap if things need replacing but mine has proved tough and reliable so far.

I have an MX5 and the Swift Sport is the 4 seat equivalent

I've been running the old 1.6 125bhp one for a couple of years - cheap, fun, bombproof

Although if you do motorway miles the later model is more refined
