Another frustrating morning with the world's pickiest buyer, you have £20k tops for:

-4.4m max length, less is better, but we're taking 20cm, not a Fiesta or Picanto,

-Hatchback, 5 door, not diesel or full electric, so petrol or hybrid (plug in or not) all good, could be an SUV, conventional hatch preferred unusually.

-Well equipped. Meaning heated leather, pale headlining (rare, when things get sporty it all gets dark), sunroof ideal but can live without, other things like HUD very much appealing.

-Seats which don't have stoopid forward leaning headrests, Kia, I'm looking at you. BMW seats also out.

Personally I'm thinking Focus Vignale or the Active ones which have leather, heated wheel, wind screens, some seem to have HUD and a pan roof too.

What else has a kitchen sink of goodness? Think the Leon Excellence Lux might be strong on kit, anything else?? I suspect some A3's might fit the bill, but S-Line tends to get like a crypt in the back with a dark headliner...

Volvo V40 Inscription T3. Find one with the Xenium pack for all the bells and whistles, inclusive of the pan roof. Fun chassis, good steer, fab seats.

VW thing named after the sport where you hit a small ball with a large stick wearing stupid trousers.

Lack of leather, before we've considered it being bereft of pretty much all toys. But yes, 5 doors, size and pale headlining. The rest, nil points!

although I have made her watch the JayEmm video which calls people "shouldaboughtagolf"'s as let's face it, there's a reason they are still best sellers.

Ooh good shout, will look them up. Buttons for manual dialing a bit 80's but as I told her, you can't have everything, unless you spend more (probably).

Not sure how you’re defining ‘posh’ but my thoughts immediately went here:

I'd avoid anything with a sunroof, or pan roof that opens.

Seen so many associated problems with them.

Skoda Karoq first the brief. It is truly versatile.
I'd recommend at least SEL spec which comes with all the toys. Can even remove rear seats entirely for load lugging.
For pan roof you'll need edition spec most likely

I think the Focus would be a good choice.

Yep sorry, wasn't sure what the top spec of a non GTI/R Golf is, does one even exist?!!! But even with a mk8 you can't go wrong.

Personally, I'd go for a Civic - but I avoid suggesting that to anyone (even friends/family) as Japanese cars are not considered premium enough for the average British buyer to spend their money on, noses are often turned up!

Apart from the BMW seats, see OP.

I have to say that I think you're bang on with the Vignale Focus in 1.5T form:

Indeed, like the £3k workshop bill to sort the leaky one on a 17 plate Leon Cupra ST I saw a week or so ago. Madness. But light, important for a child that seems to puke at the sight of a car...

It does, although like the sister Arona and whatever the VW is none of that size car has full leather, which rules them out. Go up to the next one (Kamiq? Ateca, Tiguan) and you can, but too long.

Told you it was a frustrating morning!

Lol! Tfh they have polished it and in many cases covered them in glitter, but they handle OK and the spec does knock the socks off most things. Heated seats, wheel, screens, B&O, needless change your interior light colours, it is quite a lot of kit.

Nothing wrong with a Ford unless you’re a brain dead badge snob.
