I have a car advertised on Auto trader and have had numerous phone calls offering me £2000. I assumed it must be some London scrappage scheme thing (it’ a 2007 Euro 4 diesel) but you have had to owned it before, so it’s not that. I have two people with similar racial stereotype accents saying they are coming tonight to pay cash.

It will be dark and they can’t possibly view it properly.

What is the scam?

Fake bank notes?

Money Laundering?

Any help or guidance gratefully received.

why not meet them in the day in a nice open public place and invite them to pay by bank transfer or deposit cash into the bank? Genuine buyers wont mind showing ID etc. frausters might be evasive.

Low value cars will attract buyers such as you are describing. Selling cheap cars isn't fun.

There may well be no scam, but as a rule I don't accept cash and only bank transfer these days. Once the money is in your account, you are safe really. I'd just be aware of where you meet the prospective buyer, not allow a team of 4 etc etc.
