Sold the car a couple of months back to a dealer, I’ve had some complaints and they have never been responded to or solved.
However today I got a letter from the dvla to say someone has tried to register the car please go on line to put in details of who you sold it to.
When I did this it comes up error.
I haven’t heard from the dealership to say they never had the V5 as I had to apply for a new one due to a private plate.

So technically I have sold it, got the payment and document from the dealer saying this fact but where do i stand on the V5 ?

Not sure why it wouldn’t accept the changes online

Apologies if I’ve misunderstood but If you’ve applied for a new V5 it would come back to you rather than the dealer so you would need to let the dealer know / give them the V5 so they can bring it in to trade .

The V5 you are using to try and notify the sale, is it the one with the private plate showing as the reg ?

My neighbour changed his car a few months back.
He didn't get a V5, so after about 6 weeks he phoned the DVLA to chase it.
They told him there had been no application for one, which was odd, because he's watched the dealer do the change of keeper online.
DVLA told him to send off the green slip which he did, with a form you download.
A few days later, he duly gets a V5.
Next day he gets a letter from DVLA, saying they can't send him a V5 because they need £25 from him.

The DVLA is a shambles.

One thing you can do is look at the Tax and MOT status bit of the .gov website, that says when the last V5 was issued.
If a new one has been issued, the document ref of the old one won't be valid, hence the error.

Probably best to phone DVLA.

Surely the dealer should have filled in the trader section of the V5 they got with the car and the OP should have no further interest or need to be involved.

Makes me wonder if the dealer hasn't done that and is trying to circumvent the process.

It's actually the responsibility of the (former) keeper to fill in the 'I have sold the car to a trader section' and send it to DVLA, or do the equivalent online.
But the trader often does it?

Are there scam websites?
Whe nI sold a bike to a dealer, I got an email from the DVLA same day, and a printed slip saying ' this vehicle is no longer your responsibility' or something similar a few days later.

Vanity plates cause problems?

No I had the V5 and sent off to the dealer. The letter came 2 weeks later.
I had a pic of the V5 document number and used this to inform the dvla of selling it but it didn’t accept on the website.

Just googled the Reg and the main dealer had it up for sale so assume it’s sold.

Surely the new owner would chase them for the V5 and if issues they would contact me ?
