Looking for a cheapish, reliable car for my son to use to commute to uni.

He's narrowed down his preferences to either the XV or ASX, probably looking at an 11 or 12 plate with 80k - I didn't know anything about either so asking if there are any major issues or checks to look for?

He currently has a BMW 120d E88 which has needed a few expensive jobs recently and is approaching 150k so he's looking for something that hopefully won't be quite as expensive to run

Interesting choice of car for a student , I quite like Subaru as a quirky choice of a car but being four wheel drive associated running costs will more than say an average golf , Focus etc.
A well maintained petrol Subaru will last , however parts are normally all main dealer supplied so will be expensive as its low volume car.
The problem with ASX is Mitsubishi are no longer selling car in the UK so back support long term may be a challenge.

Mitsubishi are still in the UK and have committed to support all their vehicles up to thirty years old!
