Need a new family car to replace a Peugeot 3008. I know an estate would probably be better but my wife and I both drive the car equally and she fancies another SUV for the higher driving position and tbh I don't mind it.

Would prefer something a little larger than the 3008 in terms of rear space for the kids as they get older and also in terms of boot size. So anything over 520 litres should be ok. Up to £25k but would prefer closer to £20k.

Ideally 2021+ but would consider 2019/2020 if it was low miles and good spec etc. Would prefer something well specced with Android auto etc and its not going to cause any headaches.

This is the kind of specs and features I am thinking:

Petrol/Hybrid/PHEV/Electric
Not smaller than the 3008
Reliable and too bad to tax/insure
Reversing + 360 cameras
Parking assist
Wireless phone charger
Android Auto (wireless?)
Retractable wing mirrors
Electric tailgate
Keyless entry
Automatic LED headlights
Less than 50,000 miles
Decent screen + infotainment system
Good sound system
Leather or modern interior
Decent boot size
Heated seats (bonus for rear too)
Heated steering wheel (nice to have)
Pan sun roof (nice to have)
Digital Dash
Privacy glass
Some warranty lol

Have considered:

Lexus NX 300H - boot too small
Lexus RX - these I like, but too expensive and might be pricy to insure as lots of thefts of these
Toyota RAV4 Excel/Dynamic - this is pretty close, bit bland maybe and infotainment system is rubbish. I think Android auto can be added?
Jag F-Pace - pricey and would have to go 2019 model, reliability concerns?
Mazda CX-5 - boot size on the smaller side
Audi Q5 - pricy, expensive to service and repair, would have to go to 2019 for good spec?
Hyundai Tuscon - could prob get a 2021 or 2022 Ultimate or N-Line version. Not sure if the size is big enough.
Kia Sportage - same as the Hyundai I guess
Mercedes GLC - pricey so would have to go to 2019? Not sure about servicing and repairs.
Tiguan - no idea about these and never liked the look, boot size is same as current car.
Honda CRV - can't get past the look of these

I hadn't considered electric, for example the Audi eTron and Skoda Enyaq can be had roughly for this price for 2021 cars, but the prices are all over the place and I am guessing its due to differences in battery capacity and quick charging additions so I am not sure where I would even start. Folks are trying to put me off electric saying the cost of insurance is way too high and that manufacturers have stopped making electric cars.

EV6 is too expensive.

We don't do big miles so an electric could work if it made sense.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Is second hand electric an option, any recommendations on anything I might have missed?

Si,ilar to what my wife's looking for at the moment. Her current favourite in the list is BMW X1.

She wouldn't consider electric though.

The x1 looks to be a bit smaller than my current car and the boot smaller too. The X3 is nice but similar to the Audi and MB, bit pricer and would have to be looking at 2018/2019 to get a decent specced one I think

So with the electric option, the first question is can you park at home on a drive or garage and get a mains power supply to it to charge. Home charging is the real benefit as it's dirt cheap (20% the cost of petrol) and super convenient.
Second question is, what are the longest trips you'd want to do regularly without needing to stop and charge? Public charging is fine as an occasional thing, stop and have a coffee and relax, but could get old if you have to do it week in week out. This will determine the real world range you need.
Then you can check out specific models on https://ev-database.org/imp/ - check the 'Cold Weather Highway Range' for each model as this is a reasonable indication of a 'worst case' range. (Which can be far less than the WLTP range). Allow a little bit less as you don't want to risk running right down to 0%.
You should then be able to see which models and battery sizes will be suitable for your needs. If the range is enough that you only need to stop en route to charge a few times a year, you'll spend less time charging overall than you would at a filling station for a petrol or diesel car, and a lot less money.

Manufacturers haven't stopped making EVs, and insurance isn't that high compared to cars of similar performance, and not enough to outweigh the other savings available. But do get a quote before buying.

Overall if you don't do many longer trips, an EV can be a good way to get a nearly new high-spec car for your budget, really nice to drive and save money longer term. But they're not right for everyone.

Jag I-Pace would be another EV option eg https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202402226...

If you're already looking towards Skoda how about the Kodiaq or the Tarraco, Seat equivalent.

Jaguar I-Pace

Nothing else like it for the money currently. Best car I have ever had. Pennies to run if you can charge at home.

Any reliability issues with i-pace? I remember reading on here before about how they were heavily discounted. I do like the Jags, the F-Pace is nice and the XF sportbrake always turns my head. Everyone keeps telling me they are a money pit though.

Hello, I don’t have much further to add but I did do a double take at the opening messsge as it was startlingly similar to my own forum message a few months back. Life took over with 2young kids and 18hour days and I wasn’t able to reply back to the good folks who messaged.

I shortlisted down to a RAV4 hybrid Excel variant, when to see a C5 Aircross but it was just a tad too tight in there and also agree with the NX boot being too shallow. Left me in a predicament , thought about a Kia Sportage GTLine but it doesn’t have full leather option etc etc… I was downsizing from a Cayenne.

Just so happened that work have launched a car scheme and I’ve signed up for an EQB. This will complement the current car which is a hand me down from my folks 2008 Merc A Class. no parking sensors , doesn’t need them as so much visibility and small overhangs, ok the boot isn’t big enough for our big pram but the compact holiday pram fits fine. Suitcases and baby stuff for a weekend away that’s where the cayenne came into its own swallowing 2 suitcases, large prams, Xmas presents galore all under the load cover liner.

Maybe take a look at a a Merc GLB in your budget?
Only one more to recommend is a Discovery Sport but buy from a dealer with extended warranty jic and check insurance quotes.

Skoda Kodiaq, Tiguan Allspace, Seat Tarraco - all the same car and give you more space than you have now. We had a Kodiaq for 5 years with all the toys and really liked it - no issues bar a warranty replacement water pump.

The Allspace was available in much higher spec with more toys than the other two, but also offers the least interior space.

Thanks for this - I'll have a search for your thread to check replies there. The GLB is a good shout, my neighbour bought one a couple of months back, personally I find it a bit odd looking.

I bet my missus would love the Disco sport I hadn't even considered as everyone says to avoid them at all costs, like the most unreliable car ever in smile

A Volvo XC60 T8 ticks all your boxes and if you can find one in inscription pro spec, has every option you’ve listed plus more like massaging ventilated seats.

Also at 400bhp, plenty of poke too.

These look good, any 2020 ones I have seen have been £26k+ though

Another vote for an I Pace.
There are known issues but not all cars suffer from these, in fact I'd suggest the large majority of cars are trouble free.
JLR also offer an extended warranty up to 10yrs / 100k miles.

For what it's worth, I've been running an XF Sportbrake for the last few years, and faced with a similar requirement to you, I've just put a deposit down on a Tesla Model X.

I do like the I Pace and it was front runner, initially, but the 'decent boot space' requirement tipped the balance in the end, I'm afraid.

Run, run as fast as you can.......

With the OP's budget and kit list and the fact that they want something "reliable" this is a poor choice

Jaguar warranty is ~£800 a year

On the iPace, Facebook page , some seem to have run them with no problems at all. But some can be plagued with issues.

From the experience I've had with mine, I honestly couldn't recommend one, not without a warranty anyway
Even though it is a great car to drive.

Thanks for the replies - the Peugeot is out given the issues we have had with our 3008, and by proxy the Citreon is out too. I always liked the Sorrento but would be looking newer.

We went out this morning around a few different places to look at cars, mostly for my wife to get a sense of what she likes the look of.

Things we liked:

Jag F-Pace
Mazda CX-60
Kia EV6
Q5

Didn't like:
RAV4
Tiguan (even in R-Line)
XC60 (the colour didn't help and there was actual mould in the back seat)

Was ok:
Kia Sportage 2022 but would need to be top spec like the 3 or GT Line S which pushes the budget and I'm not sure I would spend £30k on a Sportage, not sure if depreciation would be an issue.

Also looked at a Alfa stelvio but was ok, too small - but some of those Alfa Saloons look great. So much so even my wife was "maybe we don't need a SUV after all" lol. But we def need something which can swallow 2 large suitcases and all the kids gear for trips - I'm not sure if there are any luxury brand saloons which can do that, other than maybe a superb which are like big tanks.

It looks like after that trip my wife is starting to realise is not so easy picking a car, and has even suggested we up our budget to £30,000.
