Hi all,

I'm lending a hand to a family member with their car search and I know this can be dangerous territory so I'm only trying to give some brief helpful advice and go along for a general second opinion,

They have seen a Nissan Note 1.5 dci in a good spec, 2017 model, very low miles but comprehensive service record. Its a great price compared to other options.

They want to use the car for work, 3 commutes per week, 60 miles each way, plus trips away a few times a year with dog in the boot and loaded with roof box.

The sliding rear seats seem like a great idea, to either maximise boot space or leg space as the need arises.

The engine seems generally well regarded, extremely frugal and quite reliable.

These cars however do sound like they suffer from reliability problems after a cursory Google search.. they used to be provided on the car scheme where I used to work and some people did have trouble but if I remember correctly this was always with the 1.2 turbo or supercharged petrols. Maybe the diesel is okay or maybe it too suffers with dodgy French electrics?

Any insight appreciated

Cheers

It’s probably one of the longest most proven diesel engines you can buy, yes like all diesel they will have issues but preventative maintenance helps.

This is true, I think it's more the rest of the car that might be a concern

Great car, great engine and their usage sounds perfect for a diesel.

Cheers,

Thanks Chris,

I thought so too - Google does seem to show up some issues with them but it's probably like anything you only hear about the bad

They have used this engine for over 20 years and it’s still in use in various Dacia, Renault, Nissans and Mercedes.

I`ve put 175k miles on my 1.5dci K9K engined NV200 with very few issues, still going strong.

48mpg average.

I had a 1.6 petrol Tekna, lasted just over two years (best part of 34k miles, mostly motorway use). Springs, rotten back box. A few punctures.

Display didn’t have engine coolant’s temperature gauge. A single radiator failed (rotten), which was its demise - ended up being scrapped. Supplied both the coolant and air con…far too time consuming to sort it out. Not the cheapest VED either.

I know the engine is good, it's the rest of the car which appears to have reports of bad reliability

Thanks for your insight, unfortunately it seems to be a common theme with these, snapping springs regularly, electrical faults etc.

We had a 1.4 petrol note for a good few years as a family run around. Needed various suspension parts almost every year, a few electrical faults along the way such as sensors and multiple failed heater units. It never broke down but it was the most unreliable car we've had. It then started to collect water inside in the last year before an engine fault sealed its fate. I'd avoid !

1.4 will be the earlier shape Note which is considered more reliable than the later shape Note

I dont think its a bad engine but ours shat itself in a Nissan Xtrail costing us £4000 to rectify, think the mileage was on 40k at the time.
Its probably ok pushing a smaller car along but when in vans etc its a nightmare.
Just make sure its been serviced on time.

Lots of reports of water ingress problems on this last gen Note. Then my sister-in-law who has a 2015 model said that her car had been in the garage for water ingress diagnosis! Really good garage who don't charge for diagnosis or if they can't fix the problem. The leak would cost £2k to fix because it was all but inaccessible and needs another panel to be cut away to repair the leak.

Always amazes me how many people buy a new diesel car and drive hardly any distance in them, although I appreciate it may be an ex-Motobility car... just don't buy/get a diesel for short low mileage journeys!
