Hi,

Long time lurker first time posting.
I'm market for a SUV and have decide on the x5 petrol plug in hybrid...
Have seen one with 90k miles 2018 model for 22k..
Is it worth from the engine side and viability

Or any other options pls..
Need auto. Big SUV... Any fuel type.. Except electric due to residual falling.

Staying away from disco due to engine issues.

Thanks

When you say any fuel type do you mean it can be a petrol and diesel as well as a PHEV.
I'd only choose a PHEV is your driving pattern warrants it.

The hv battery won’t be under warranty at that mileage, I believe it’s 60k / 6 years, so a slight risk there. If it were to fail, I’d budget around £3000 to get a used replacement off ebay and an independent hybrid specialist to replace. You’ll probably be ok though

Have a search on the site here, there was a long thread in Readers Cars with a few X5 PHEV owners.

If it's the previous generation with the 4 Cylinder engine (badged 40e from memory) then best avoided.

If it's the G05 generation with the 6 Cylinder (badged 45e) then very good, but when I was looking last year, the 3.0 diesel made more sense used.

It wasn't particularly well reviewed at launch and suffered from pretty poor range, meaning you were running a pretty heavy vehicle on a smallish 2.0 engine. This isn't going to have got any better with the usual deterioration of the battery. For that model I would 100% be looking for the 3.0 diesel.

Doubt it. Those warranties are not worth the paper they are written on.

I disagree with this. If the OP is doing mainly short, sub 10 mile journeys in stop-start city driving, I’d way sooner have the PHEV over a 3.0 diesel. The diesel only starts to make sense at higher mileages. I’d only consider the diesel if my commute was over 20 miles each way and I was covering over 12000 miles a year

If we are talking about the G05 (and purchasing costs were roughly neutral) then I'd agree - especially when new. Even a year ago, the PHEV was pushing a ~ £10k premium used without any tax advantage vs PHEV.

With the old powertrain, which only had a 14mi rated range when new, you are going to be lugging a lot of extra weight around with a 2.0 petrol engine.

I keep looking at these to replace my T6 kombi, I think the 40e would be terrible on fuel, I had a 2018 330e and that was pretty bad on range for ev only and mpg wasn't the best, the 40e I believe is the same set up as that but in a bigger car.

Wife has a 330d and the engine does feel and sound good for a diesel, Ill probably go for the 30d should I change.

Appreciate mine is a "van" currently, but lugging 2t around in a 2.0d gets me about 30mpg if I'm very lucky! A 2.0i in an X5 can't be much better.

Yup looks like this is the issue combined with battery degradation... The prices on these are all falling as well

Harry Metcalfe did a review of his 45e a couple of years back, I think he also references the previous 40e which he also had and used as a daily.
