£4000 Sturdy Daily
Discussion
Hello
My sister needs a new car, however she is a car killer, no mechanical sympathy whatsoever and not particularly good at controlling the car anyway. She also does very few miles, the vast majority being within the town.
£4000 to spend, has to last a number of years while also costing very little to run.
Any suggestions?

1.6i is pretty much bulletproof & maintenance costs are sensible too.

Jazz all day long. You can get some quite nice spec like a ex or a exl (leather). They don’t really go wrong and parts are cheap as you like if they do. My other half and sister has had them and they both got a lot of abuse with kids and running with no oil on the dipstick. Don’t buy a bent one and your golden.
Fiesta, wife runs an 11 plate zetec s, costs peanuts to run and service. She has put 60k miles on it since i got her it to drive (destroy)
Spends its life loaded up with horse feed and all the other crap associated with horses and goes bouncing up and down a farm track to said horse twice everyday and its held up to the abuse amazingly, about £350 in repairs over those miles on mostly age related wear, springs/bushes etc.
Shall get her the same again when this once eventually dies.

£4k is a particularly sordid sector of the used car world, I'd suggest buying anything self-propelled with a new MOT for under a grand and keep saving for the next one.My sister needs a new car, however she is a car killer, no mechanical sympathy whatsoever and not particularly good at controlling the car anyway. There are loads of viable cars which WBAC value at hundreds which have a year or more in them.
Find someone who needs to sell.
Other opinions are available, and worth exactly what you've paid for this one!
Good Luck!

Yes, I told them exactly the same thing! Find the absolute cheapest car with 12 months MOT, doesn't matter what it is but apparently that isn't an option because "all the cars are old and worn out"... They fail to realise so are the £4000 vehicles. It's her money though, so she can hang herself, I'm just trying to minimise financial impactThere are loads of viable cars which WBAC value at hundreds which have a year or more in them.

A Jazz is a great shout, I briefly thought of them and then forgot about them.
It's quite easy to find cars for £4k,
But when people say they want a car for £4k, they usually mean they want several years' motoring for £4k.
We're talking about cars of what? Ten years old?
So stuff can go wrong. £500 bill is not much of an event.
Then MOT time, it's not unusual to get £500 bill for run of the mill items like brakes, the odd suspension bush or whatever.
A few things go wrong at once and £1k is gone.
£4k is enough capital tied up that you need to keep up with servicing. Which ranges from £30 for a DIY oil and filter to £££?
It's easy for people like me to buy cars for sums like £4k, because I can find another £4k if it doesn't work out.
I will still have a pretty high ranking in the cheapskate stakes, when averaged over half a lifetime of driving and half a million miles.
Personally, I don't want the responsibility of telling someone they can't go wrong with x, y or z.
There are a lot of cars out there which would be in the £4k dealer price arena, I'd guess somewhere between 30 and 50% of those cars will be scrapped within 3 years?
Then you've got the factor of people keeping cars which don't cause them any trouble, but selling those which they've ceased to trust.

agree with everything said so far.
£4k is a tricky amount. It doesn't get you anything newer and less likely to go wrong, yet isn't shed money either.
I once bought a 1998 Avensis 2.0 petrol estate for £1100. That was about 10 yrs ago. I sold it to a mate's brother for £800 once i'd had a year or two out of it. It's still going strong.
But those days are over i think.
Jazz
Hyundai/Kia hatch of some kind
C1/Aygo/107 also worth a look
Main thing is you want petrol and non-turbo'd. Avoid autos.
