I currently own a cheap 1.4tdi polo which for the last 4 years has been used and abused.
I work sporadic shifts and quite frankly I just fancy something a little nicer.
I work away from home during the month and cover 700 miles on the motorway and then everything else is rather short 10-15 minute journeys compromising of 5 mile routes.

I've got to the point where I want a newer car, a comfier car and I'm not exactly sure if I should stick with petrol or diesel for a car that is just doing the mondane tasks.

I have a toy in the guise of a E63 M6 V10 so the replacement doesn't need to set pulses racing but I'd still like it to hit around 40mpg.

I've looked at mk7 gti, mk7 fiesta st, 1.4tsi engines from VAG, Leon FR tdi. I'm just stumped on what to buy, I don't really want to spend more than 10k and would be happy spending half that tbh, one bang for buck seems to be the 635D but I'm not sure if my short journeys would run into DPF issues.

Anybody have any advice on what or where to start looking

If you've got a car that does the job, and you trust it to go on doing the job, the only reason to change is because you see something and think 'I Like That'.

Also, have a think about what you expect from spending £10k.

It's very different to spend £10k on a car and be happy to spend another £10k next year, compared with spending £10k and expecting it to last 5 years or still be worth £9k next year.
