Hi all,

Need to replace the other Half's car / the daily family run around.

Budget is c.£15k, up to £20k if needs be. Looking for something that can fit one 18 month old in car seat, pram and a bit of shopping and will be reasonable MPG (will be doing around 30 miles a day with nursery run etc.) - but ideally not totally dull to drive for the occasions I need to use it.

Will need to be an auto too unfortunately as she doesn't drive manual. The obvious choice seems to be a Golf GTI but thought I'd appeal to the PH hive mind for other options?

How about a GTI, but more practical - so a proper dad wagon

Skoda Octavia VRS, most the GTI performance but alot more practical.
It has the GTI running gear but looks more dad ish

Mini Clubman or Countryman - Cooper S or Works.

Clubman is the better package. The boot floor has 2 levels so pram can likely be folded and go in upright. Good space in rear for baby seat. Had one for same job as you described, loved it.

What about a slightly roomier hatchback so it'll be easier to fit the baby seat/pram and associated gubbins, etc?

Normal hatchback sized Renault Megane, but just the warm GT with 205 bhp rather than the full fat RS 280
