Morning all, we are considering trading up from our S-Max while it still has a bit of value. We have not been particularly happy with it compared to our old version which never let us down.

Criteria is essentially something comfortable to waft 2 x adults and 3 x children (with occasional requirement for extra mates etc, hence wanting 7 seats) around locally, and with the very sporadic longer distance run on holiday etc. Low mileage requirement means diesel is not a necessity.

The wife likes the look of the new-shape 5008, likes the idea of the 1.6 petrol, the "reviews" all seem to suggest it meets our criteria, I am personally nervous about a leap into the unknown with a French breed...

I think these were prime lease vehicles back when leasing was stupidly cheap so am hoping there might be plenty of experience on the forum - can anyone share their real-world experience of these either being brilliant and dependable, or blowing up dramatically on the motorway?

Not 5008, but we have just bought Citroen C5 Aircross with 1.6T and 8 speed auto and the drivetrain seems to really suit the car. Auto is proper torque converter. Car is not fast but has adequate power. Gearbox is very smooth. On paper this combo is most reliable of the lot. The 2.0L diesel would be my 2nd choice.

The interior of the French stuff blows a lot of the rivals away in my opinion. Just watch the equipment specs as a lot of things changed for worse during COVID years.

Also not a 5008 but I run a DS7 which also has the 1.6 engine with the 8sp Auto.

No problems reported. Auto box is lovely and smooth and the engine has more than enough oomph to make good progress. Lovely ride and interior is well put together.

Make sure you're ok with the dash. Not everyone gets on with the 'dials over the steering wheel' thing and the smaller steering wheel as a result. I personally thought it worked really well in a previous Peugeot I had but opinions vary.

2 colleagues at work have them and they rated them. One is on his second and no real problems with them.

I've a 5008 1.6 THP 6 speed auto 2018 GT Line.
We use it mostly around town and school runs with occasional long trips. The 3rd row seats can be removed when you need extra space, good for hols.
Three individual 2nd row sliding and folding seats is great.

Good bits:
-1.6 turbo is def strong enough. It's more of a cruiser but has a sport button which holds the gear in lower revs if you want to go quicker or be a bit nippier around town or overtaking on single lanes. 99% of time I leave it in normal mode.
-6 speed auto is good, occasionally I'll use the paddle shifters to change gear. Believe 8 speed is better.
-It's good going around corners for something quite so big.

So so bits:
-HVAC controls are via the touch screen, buttons and knobs would def be a better design.
-Wing mirrors fold automatically and can't change that on the touchscreen, needs dealer to do it. If it's iced up it's not ideal on the wing motors.
-The MyPeugeot app is a bit meh.
-The rear camera is very wide angle so you initially end up reversing faster as you think you have more space. You get used to it soon enough.
-Unless you pay extra for the Nav with speedcam then it doesn't warn you about speed cams. That option was free on my Toyota Verso and just beeped even when nav was off. No such built in free option with 5008, Android auto google maps for that.
-Stop/Start system. Seems to depend which way the wind is blowing if it works! Basically on longer journeys (1+ hours) it kicks in but most of the time it doesn't. Doesn't bother me.
-The suspension can be a bit jittery over bigger potholes, it's fine but my old Verso was better.

Potentially bad bits:
-The timing chain/tensioner can loosen up which means changing one or both. Think my tensioner spring is loose so chain rattles a bit when engine starts from cold. Need to wait about a min for oil pressure to build and stops rattling. I'll be changing the tensioner soon (garage job).
1.6 needs correct oil.
-It's a direct injection engine so like all those engines it has the potential to suffer from carbon buildup. Mine seems fine but I add an additive with PEA in it to help (might be snake oil). Also the very occasional Italian tune up I think helps (well that's my excuse anyway)

If I had the option of buying again I'd def listen closer for timing chain rattle and buy model with front cameras as well.

Overall it's good, we like it.

Thanks really useful info smile.#

A cruiser is exactly what I am after, just something that gets us all from A to B in comfort and waftiness.

I wonder if anyone has experience of the petrol 1.2 L triple? It has documented belt problems , but the belts have apparently been upgraded - when? (several times even?) It has less power than the 1.6 but only slightly less torque. Which is more reliable?

I was on the PSA car scheme for a while, I have had 2 5008s in the past and several other cars with the 1.2.

I found in the 5008 compared to the diesel model on my own it was fine, even when loaded and full of family it drove fine I just found fuel consumption took a hit, especially with a roof box.

Wife also had a car on the scheme the 2008 1.2 and now she has a 330d and reckons she puts less fuel in even doing local journeys.

Nice cars though, plenty of room.
