Family convertible supercar
Discussion
I’ve been driving a McLaren 650s for a few years, and also have an Emira.
I’d quite like to be able to take out the whole family (wife and two young children) so am thinking of switching these for a 2+2 convertible.
I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to match the McLaren in terms of performance, but I’m fine to give some of that up as long as the new car is agile and a lot of fun.
Is there anything else other than a Portofino that I should be considering?
Thanks.

Grancabrio is a bit of a boat but it's the only semi-supercar-ish softtop with proper almost-adult-sized rear seats - depends on kids ages.
Subframes turn to dust and parts are expensive but they sound epic - I had an MC which has a louder exhaust. Best standard exhaust I've heard I think.
Smaller seats gives you loads of choice - 911, Astons, LC500, Ferraris etc.
There's always the 8 series BMW but don't do that...

I went for a California so we could go out as a family. No one can fit behind me when I am driving (but I am 6’3) but there is room behind the passenger seat for a car seat.
The Grancabrio offers a lot more room but I thought the car looked too ‘big’ - just a personal opinion.
For practicality I would look at the Continental GTC. We had one for a short time and loved it, and there is useable space in the back.

Thanks for your thoughts. I want something modern. The Bentley’s a bit appealing, but if I get that I might be tempted to get it instead of the Range Rover.
I’ll try a Portofino and Portofino M when the weather’s a bit nicer.
My children are four and six, so I can probably get three or four years out of a 2+2 before they outgrow it.

We have an M4 convertible that does great summertime family duty including a large boot for a droptop. It's not a supercar but has been dead reliable and really well built.
Maybe I should give that a try. I do like M4s, and perhaps keeping the 650s for me and using the BMW for “fun bit not supercar” isn’t a bad idea.MDL111 said:
what about the new model SL63 AMG? I have not driven one, but supposedly it is quite good... 3.6 sec to 100 km/h and 315 km/h top speed ... probably not many faster 4(ish)-seater convertibles
I’ve a slightly irrational / emotional reason not to do that. I bought what must have been pretty much the last of the old SL63s and after two years and only 3,000 miles listened to my wife and sold it.I had wanted one since the SL55 came out, and think I might forever compare the new engine unfavourably with that massive supercharged V8.
You’re right though, I should give it a try.
Hi OP, I'm in a somewhat similar situation to you but looking around the 100k mark. I'm stuck between 911 Carrera 4s, or wait a little longer for the GTS to drop to 100k. Plus the 2 year warranty with approved used provided gives that extra peace of mind!
SL43 fits easily in my budget and has depreciated monstrously already - but I think the SL63 would hit the spot, but cant justify it at its current price.
Weaker contenders:
- DB11 - too old now
- GranCabrio - feels a bit dated too, especially with the new granturismo out now
- Portofino not excitable (sorry!)

I had a 911 997 cabriolet when they were new, and never really fell in love with it. I’ve no idea why not, but it just never pressed the right buttons.SL43 fits easily in my budget and has depreciated monstrously already - but I think the SL63 would hit the spot, but cant justify it at its current price.

I think, having read people’s thoughts above that I’m going to end up choosing between a Portofino M, an S63 Coupe, and a Bentley.
If it’s the Ferrari then it’ll replace both sports cars, but the other two would probably see me keeping the McLaren.
