Looking at getting a 7 seater. Have 3 kids 7, 4 and 1 year old. Currently have an Insignia estate with a multimac for the kids seats. This is ok but looking to upgrade, plus the Mrs prefers the higher position of an SUV (had an Alfa Stelvio prior to the insignia).
Want something that we can get 3 child seats in, but not interested in an MPV (even though I know these are the most logical answer!). The 2 rear seats will be occasional use, primarily for children, eldest may use 1 of the 3rd row for extra space on longer journeys, and makes it easier as she can fasten herself in now.
I have narrowed it down to the 3 models in the title. I have discounted many other cars, Discovery due to reliability issues, X5 rear seats not as useable, things like Tiguan allspace, Tarraca, Sorrento, Kodiaq etc as all being a size down from the 3 preferred cars.

My first choice is the SQ7 with the massive torque 4.0 V8 diesel, but I’m aware I’d be at the lower end of the market for one of these, and likely higher mileage compared to the others. Main reason for one of these is that engine! Plus the economy isn’t really too much different to the 3litre V6 model, which is surprising considering the performance difference! We will cover approx 12k miles per year.
Standard Q7 with the spec I would want (2017 onwards, pan roof, digital dash, bigger wheels, black leather seats, and ideally air suspension) with reasonable mileage (<50k) I am already pushing up towards £35k, at which point I feel I may as well pay a bit more and get the SQ7 which comes with most these as standard?!

The XC90 would be the D5 engined version, which is my major turn off. A 2.0 diesel to power this big car just seems underwhelming, and apparently economy isn’t great (high 20’s at best). Do like the R-design styling though.
I did consider the twin air models, but as we do a few long runs it would essentially be a 2 litre petrol engine which is going to kill economy.

Am I mad for considering an SQ7 at £35-38k?

The diesel SQ7 is basically the diesel Bentayga but a fraction of the price

I'm in the same boat looking for a 7 seater, looking at all those you've highlighted, have you looked at the GLE?

The Sorento think has the best mechanism to get in/out of the 3rd row, 2nd row seats effortlessly glide forward.
The Q7 is fold down and then fold again believe. But I couldn't quite get used to the styling of the Sorento.

Yeah I’m not a huge fan of the GLE exterior, interior is nice. I also think the rear space is not as good as the Q7 or xc90 either.

we've the 'B5' oil burner. does low to mid 40's on a run. engine size isn't an issue.

Interesting, is the B5 essentially just the D5 with a 48V system?
What’s the average mpg like on mixed driving, round town etc?

Went through a similar exercise though I was mainly comparing the XC90 and Q7 (not SQ7).

Supposed to be taking delivery of the XC90 tomorrow as it was a better deal (numbers wise) and I preferred the overall interior feel.

Q7 - I looked at the post facelift versions which have the dual touchscreen. 6 ISOFIX points which are a massive advantage but quite a big and hefty extras list and the interior in the last 2 rows is not very inspiring. I also prefer the exterior of the previous version personally, but the interior of the post 2020 ones.

XC90 - a more luxurious feel overall with the interior, though the main infotainment screen feels a little dated (size wise). Better for safety, lots of kit as standard as they don't really have a long options list and an integrated booster seat in the 2nd row (which was a big plus for us).

Went for the 2.0 B5 diesel version which my brother also has, supposed to be low to mid 40s on combined runs and maybe mid-high 40s on the motorway. Didn't feel sluggish when I test drove it, though to be fair - I wasn't planning on pushing it as it's a family wagon.

30ish. we get 26mpg when towing a 2.3 tonne trailer around the southwests hills.

Another vote for SQ7 best overall motor I have had, would have had another if they kept the diesel engine.

We had two isofix in the front set of rear seats and a average adult could sit in the middle comfortable enough for short ish journey.

The last 2 seats I did have adults in for short journeys but great for kids.

Amazing engine, performance and MPG...if they launched it again with that engine it would replace my SVR.

I would say, i'd go for an SQ7 if it wasn't the other halfs wagon.

That is decent to be fair! Only thing I’d prefer is the quilted leather interior, and I think they call it the ‘black pack’ exterior styling. the grey is not my first choice colour for these, but I’d still have one!

Well after a few months of looking (wasn’t in a rush, so happy to wait for the right car), I bought a SQ7 recently:

Not my first choice of colour (ideally would have preferred the dark Navarra blue) but this Daytona grey came with most of the spec I was after and is in very good condition, right wheels, red calipers, pan roof, quilted leather, flat bottom steering wheel, matrix headlights, side steps, black & tech packs etc etc. First impressions are very good. Feels quite surreal how something so big and heavy shifts like it does! Very comfortable ride on the air suspension, even with the big wheels (22”)/low profile tyre combo.

Averaging 30mpg around town, managed 35 on a 100 mile drive home after purchase so very impressed there too.
Comfortably get 3 child seats in the middle row, 2 Isofix seats in the outer seats and slim high back booster in middle seat.

Nice choice OP.

Genuine question and it may be the camera angle but can you actually stand on the side steps to get in? as they look way too slim!.

Cheers,

Chris

Looks really nice.

I'm considering similar. Are there any options that are a must have to look out for and what spec did you want but didn't get (you said this had most)?

Thanks.

Looks great.

I'm in a similar position. Currently have a galaxy but want to change.

Keep flip-flopping between an XC90 (B5 MHEV) and a Q7...the higher powered 3.0.

Can anyone provide reassurance the XC90 isn't really underpowered?

Yeah they are a lot bigger than they look in the pic, the doors cover a lot of them so they are a lot wider with the doors open.

My must haves were the wheels, calipers, pan roof, flat bottom wheel, matrix lights. Really wanted the quilted leather and car play but would have accepted the standard black leather if everything else was correct.

Other options I would have liked but not deal breakers were things like the auto parking / full top view camera / auto tow bar (only for a bike carrier)
