Hi all

After some PH thoughts on next car…... I know that there are a couple of threads on SUV’s on the go so apologies for adding another, however price-wise I’m looking at £50k and have it narrowed down to a handful of options

• Macan S (20/21 reg)
• F-Pace SVR (20 possibly 21 reg)
• Merc GLC C43 (22 reg)
• BMW X3 or X4M (21 reg)
• Maserati Levante (22 reg) I know that this is bigger than the others but it was a bit of a left field moment after they appeared in my search on AT and i was quite intruiged by them

I think i'll probably have to go to one of those car supermarket type places to get up close and personal of all of them at once so as to compare and then once narrowed down will spend a bit more time finding a couple of good examples, in the meantime anyone got any real-world experience of any of the above and or general constructive comments?

Thanks in advance

I think you need to add an Audi Q5 S-Line to your list, for a daily you won't go far wrong and better value than Macan.

XC60 is the most comfortable car I've driven, and in plug in T8 guise pretty quick. F-Pace has a better reputation for handling though.

I'd have an Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio over the cars listed. Sits nicely between the Porsche and Maserati

The Stelvio is a lovely thing, from your list if you want something special this is the choice. I would have one if we didn't need something a size up.

+1 who thinks you need to add a Alfa Stelvio to your list. Probably the best drivers SUV a little lacking internally but recent updates has rectified this somewhat.

I have driven a family member’s 2023 Macan S a lot and it’s a great thing. Feels like a fast hot hatch. Downsides are it’s small in the back (smaller than a golf). It likes to drink. Gets the wrong sort of attention. Check options on them carefully because they hardly come with any spec as standard.

I have also spent time in an XC60 T8 and it’s fast enough and more refined and serene to drive. Ultimately I prefer it as a daily in ultimate spec with air suspension. You won’t be too far off a new one. Not as fun to drive as a Macan. Doesn’t need any options. Comes with everything as standard.

The sound of the SVR would be hard to pass up out of that selection.

Why not the GLC 63S?
My money would go on a facelift (70 plate onwards) GLC63S AMG. Your budget might be stretched by a few grand but it would be worth it.

Harry Metcalfe rated the F Pace SVR when he reviewed it. I’ve been keeping an eye on prices which have been dipping. Then I worked out it would cost the best part of £500 a month in fuel. I’m guessing you’re not that bothered about the fuel costs looking at the potential list.

You don't say what the use case is but a Model X might also fit the bill.

Another vote for the Alfa. Or the Jag depending on what size and age car you want.

Good review on PH comparing these two.

Thanks again for all the comments…. Certainly some food for thought, gonna spend a little time over the weekend doing a little more research to try and narrow things down a bit.

As for usage, we don’t do many miles hence fuel /mpg not really being too big a concern and most of the time it’s just two of us so rear space not a major factor either. However we need to be able to fit a couple of paddle boards in. I know I could look at estates but wife would prefer the higher position of an suv (…. happy wife etc etc!!)

Had the Alfa, amazing car. Very easy to nick though, need a Ghost Immobiliser as default security.
