A good friends 320i decided to leak all its oil and has developed rod knock so he's looking for a new car.

He does 15k miles a year and he wants power and economy and it must be a German car (I tried swaying him to jap but he won't budge).

What would you guys recommend, he's open to diesel providing its ULEZ exempt.

Personally I wouldn't get involved, if you recommend a car and it goes wrong (which it probably will being German) then it will be your fault for recommending it.

Oh I agree, I'm simply going to provide him some recommendations and he can take his pick.

I told him to avoid the 320i due to chain and oil issues and here we are...

I find cars at this price point especially if your after power and economy is quite a tricky proposition.

You’re looking for an advanced car at the end of its warranty life. You could get lucky or you could end up out of pocket with big bills.

For me at 15k miles per year I would either get on the lease train so you know you have a warranty and save the big initial outlay or go cheaper and get something simple.

Merc e320 diesel. Plenty of oomph and great for long distances.

Are they ULEZ exempt at this price point?
