5 and 3 series - identify Apple Car Play - G series BMWs
Discussion
Looking at 320d/520d and perhaps their petrol counterparts presently.
Preferably a 2019 69 on with the newer dash pod but if I find a good 17 on (5 series only) will be happy with that also.
However it’s really unclear if they have Apple CarPlay - see reports some had a subscription, that’s now free? Is the hardware there on all cars subject to unlocking ?
Sad as it sounds it’s a deal breaker for me - is there a way of confirming visually from the adverts I.e a certain screen or I drive version?
This is an example (67 plate 5 series)

I have a 2017 G31 and Apple CarPlay is available for a one-off fee I believe.
Looking at the original price list there doesn't appear to be any hardware dependency for it, implying it's just a software upgrade.
My car has a head-up display which gives directions from the built-in satnav which I find really great. Using sat-nav from the phone doesn't provide this facility, which to me would be a major step backwards. I don't know if this has changed in later models.

That’s reassuring thank you. The one I’m interested in looks fairly standard specification, so don’t think it has any upgrades as such. Looking at the original price list there doesn't appear to be any hardware dependency for it, implying it's just a software upgrade.

I found a thread online which suggested that it is now free but I’m not sure if that’s dependent on someone initially buying it or subscribing, I.e the renewal being free.
All G series 3 series come with IDrive7 which has Carplay and Android Auto as standard (AA was missing from early ID7 versions but should have been updated now to include it)
The G series 5 series was iDrive 6 until MY20 (late 2019) which got Carplay only as a purchasable option in the iDrive Store. No Android Auto.
People with laptops can get your carplay for cheaper if its not already been added but it will not stick if it ever gets a dealer update.
From Q3 2019 onwards 5 series were built with iDrive 7 but there would have been existing stock out there so quite alot of late 2019/early 20 cars wouold be the older IDrive 6.
iDrive 6 has traditional looking instrument screen, IDrive 7 has the backwards "round the edge" dash cluster.

Spot on exactly what I’m looking for, thanks. The G series 5 series was iDrive 6 until MY20 (late 2019) which got Carplay only as a purchasable option in the iDrive Store. No Android Auto.

Looks like there are hardly any 5ers in budget that have that dashboard whereas all but a couple of 3ers do - two I’ve spotted seem to have the dash with the plastic rings stuck over the lcd.
Going to try and see a 19 330i M Sport on Friday

I had an 18 plate 5 series last year , didn’t have it but had it added by a coder. Cost £125 and works the same.
If you are looking at 2019 above it is worst case scenario. Buy the car you want and have it added , it was done over the phone.
Oh really, does yours have the advanced Bluetooth etc mentioned above? Wonder if it’s not possible for certain configurations. If you are looking at 2019 above it is worst case scenario. Buy the car you want and have it added , it was done over the phone.
Wired is fine if this is a limitation

Not a G series but I own an F82 M4 and I had to pay a one off fee to have Apple carplay activated in my car, if I recall correctly it was £260 and I did it through the My BMW app as an OTA update to the car.
I have paid for it and now have it for life, it's not an annual subscription but I'm not sure if for example I traded the car in at a main dealer they would take it off again and make the next owner pay, I guess If I was to sell the car privately or through a non main dealer it would remain there for the next owner.
