I’m considering switching out my weekend car and I’m not sure what to do. I currently own a 981 Cayman S PDK but for some reason I just haven’t connected with it. Maybe it’s been a bit over hyped or maybe it’s just not suited to my driving style I’m not sure.

So I’m considering switching to either a V6 S FType or Manual Supra, budget for the F-Type would be £30k max but I’m willing to put the extra towards a nearly new supra as they’re going for around £42,000 as ex demos. Pros and cons of each:

GR Supra - Manual
+ 72 plate so newer
+ Manual
+ 10 year warranty
+ Under 1000 miles
+ Rare
- Less driving character
- Not the best noise out of the 2022 supra

F-Type
+ Will still look fantastic in 10 years
+ The noise sounds great on the videos I’ve seen
+ Better quality interior?
+ More character due to noise and engine
- Auto as the manuals are rare
- 2013-2016 plate so older
- Potentially more wear and tear being older
- Reliability concerns with JLR although FType seems ok?
- No Warranty

It feels a bit of a head/heart choice. Or do I stick with the Porsche? The reasons I don’t gel with it are:
- Not the best sound until higher revs (no PSE)
- Getting to those high revs is rare due to the long gearing
- Always a little worried that a big bill will pop up
- I don’t really utilise the cars dynamics. I feel it would come alive when you’re on it which makes me think that a sport GT car is more me.

Of those two it'd be the Supra for me.

Quite a rare sight on the roads too.

I personally do think the Porsches are overhyped. I had one and I just couldn’t see fuss. It felt nice and I certainly like to push on and yeah it’s good but not earth shattering.

The GR - mind Purchase but I like this more and more easy day. Look lovely too.
Jag - heart purchase.

Even though the jag doesn’t have major issues it sure as hell has maintenance issues like the sub frame etc.

Jag for sure.

I think the Supra is not nice looking at all and I hate the shared BMW interior bits, seems bodged to me albeit I suppose it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the option of sharing so much.

Granted the Supra is definitely a marmite car, I like the looks but I don’t know how well it will age.

You’re right about the maintenance on the FType, that I don’t mind so much its just looking on forums and seeing that there are injector replacements and in some cases a new supercharger replacement that scares me a little.

I like to see the Supra as a z4 coupe that Toyota have fettled with and added a 10 year warranty too, then it feels much more acceptable.

Jaguar would be my choice; convertible V6 S. if it has to be a coupé, I’d aim for a sunroof as well.

Another underwhelmed previous 981 owner here, I went to an SC Elise (fantastic but obviously compromised) and then an Alpine which was brilliant. Lacks the engine drama and not manual if those are both important but as a B road weapon it was ace. Also, surprisingly refined (much more so than the 981).

Probably doesn't help your position but maybe worth a look.

Personally I would keep the Porsche but if you haven't gelled with it then may as well move it on.

I would say Jag but you mention a worry about getting a big bill from the Porsche and I doubt the Jaguar is any less costly if things go wrong which leaves you with the Supra

Have you tried the newer turbo 981s? They provide a much more fun drive for day-to-day due to the torque low down.

I’ve had 2 f types one v6 and one v8 and currently have a supra. For me the supra is a much better car and feels a lot more nimble but that v8 noise was thunderous!!

I think you mean the 718. Maybe worth a go?

As a weekend car, the Alpine A110 is a great suggestion and is a nice balance between the comfort / GT ability of the F Type with the fun and dynamics of a lighter more-focused car like an Elise / Exige. It’s going to come down to your intended use but if you aren’t using the dynamics of the 981 then an Elise won’t be for you, and maybe an Alpine is not what you after either.

Supra will depreciate more but cost little to run, F type will cost a lot more to run but will depreciate less. Have a drive of both and see what you prefer.

Supra for me. Jaguar is very desirable but I'd be scared to own one!!

Supra. Much more rare, and if you're worried about the prospect of the Cayman throwing a bill, you'll have the same with the Jag.

10 year warranty with the Supra if serviced on schedule by Toyota.

As much as I love the looks of the F-Type I'd probably go for the Supra - but then I have an older Z4M Coupe!

Jag will be way more fun and feel more special than the Toyota.

If it was me I’d go the Supra. I’m always keeping an eye on them.

However in my eyes the Supra is basically a less practical but cooler looking M2. So I know what I’m getting and it works for me as I daily mine but maybe not special enough as a weekend only car.

I find the Jag really appealing in that it just looks amazing and oozes cool. Track times are irrelevant it’s just special simple as that. I just track my cars so wouldn’t suit me but if I didn’t I’d go the Jag.

Love a Porsche and Alpine right up my street but maybe more on the sports side than you are looking I feel.

Don’t think their is a wrong pick just the flavour you want.

Other left field alternatives that may be completely unsuitable are Lotus Evora, Ford Mustang, BMW I8, Aston Martin Vanquish, Audi TTRS, Alfa Romeo 4C and M2/M4 Comps or 8 series.

Supra. Pretty rare sight and I think it'll age well. Engine is a cracker and a manual would be lovely.
