We've had a little Skoda Citigo 5 door manual in the family for the past 6-7 years. Bought originally as my eldest sons first car, then passed to middle son as his first one, and now my daughter has it. They've put about 50-60k miles on it between them, it's never let them down and will do 50-60mpg. My daughter went off to work Camp America last summer and it was left with us. It's still a great drive and I took every opportunity to get in it and have a razz around.

As above.
VW up! Get the right combo and they look quite nice. Ours gets beat on pretty bad and it just goes. Parts are cheap as you like even for big jobs which these should never need. Apart from the purchase price I don’t think there is a cheaper ice car to run that is anywhere close to as reliable and simple.
They drive great as well. Get the normal n/a engine and it’s quick enough and comfy enough with cruise control and heated seats.
Small on the outside big on the inside. Amazing wee car.

Why not upgrade to a slightly bigger Toyota Yaris 1.3 VVT-i - these are supremely reliable
