£10k budget 4-5dr fun family car
Discussion
Time to replace the wifes trusty IX35.
She doesn't need a diesel as long journeys are a rarity these days. We've got another family sized car so hers only has to serve as family transport in emergencies. We'd still like something with 4 or 5 doors but being able to carry loads of luggage/prams etc isn't an issue for us nowadays.
It needs to be relatively economical and reliable and I'd quite like something fun to drive (doesn't need to be fast). Only things I've come up with so far are 5dr Mini Cooper or BMW i3 REx. Any other suggestions? Budget £10k give or take a few K

Early golf 7 gti are getting 10k ish now for a decent one.
Astra GTC VXR would be ideal but 3dr only. Astra K 1.6 turbo kicks out nearly 200bhp and is pretty unassuming if thats your thing.
Then theres focus ST, 130i, megane RS? any hot hatch basically.
I'm thinking more a level down from the likes of the ST, RS, GTI. More because she doesn't need anything that quick and will moan constantly about fuel economy in those sorts of cars. Hence the little 1.5 Cooper, I3 which gets lots of praise on here... maybe something like a 5dr Swift SportAstra GTC VXR would be ideal but 3dr only. Astra K 1.6 turbo then. Elite nav gets you heated leather seats (front and rear) as well as a heated steering wheel! Supposedly a decent drive too. Kia Rio First Edition 120:

Re-reading your original criteria, I like your suggestion of a BMW i3, as they’re interesting cars, and supposedly fun to drive. Personally I’d prefer the pure battery model and not the REx, but I guess it depends on your usage. I’ve heard the insurance can be expensive, as the carbon fibre body is expensive to repair.

Probably no need for estates or bigger hatchbacks here. Fiesta ST is probably the default choice for a sporty hatchback, that can also carry kids in the back. £10k gets a 2016 car.
