Looking at my options if we end up going for a new Volvo XC90 vs a Q7.

The Volvo only has ISOFIX points on the 2 outer seats in the 2nd row and none on the 3rd row.

Our plan would be to have the kids in the 3rd row and I wanted to see if there are any high back booster seats (for a 6yr and 4yr old) that we could look at?

I'm not keen on the backless boosters as they just look like glorified cushions and not sure of the safety they offer.

Any recommendations on what will fit comfortably in the 3rd row of the XC90?

Have been there recently myself. Expecting third child, but thankfully the eldest is out of her car seat (now 11) so it's just been a case of trying to find a car with enough space between the seats rather than 3 ISOFIX.

I use the Kiddy Phoenix or GuardianFix for my kids. I originally bought them because of their very high results on the ADAC tests in Germany, but they're very useful also because you can use them with or without ISOFIX (the arms for the latter fold back into the seat) and you secure it just with the seatbelt.

I've used them in numerous taxis abroad and also in the front of our campervan if necessary. Highly recommend.

I had XC90, Q7 and Disco5 shortlisted. Ended up going with the Disco5 on a heart over head decision. 2.5k miles in and haven't at all been disappointed.

Thanks, that’s along the lines of what I’m after.

High back boosters with side impact protection which will fit side by side without ISOFIX (some way of mechanism sliding back into the body) and can be secured using seatbelts only.

There’s some sources on the net that claim you don’t even need booster seats in the 3rd row, as these seats are meant for children? Not sure how true that is.

Got 3 of these for our lot, come with Isofix if you want to secure it, don't have to use them though if you don't have Isofix. Fits in the 3rd row of our 5008 no problem. Swear we paid 30 quid for them a few years back though!

We have Britax kidfix for our 4 year old who's now too big for rear facing.

You don't have to use the isofix so just belt is fine.

Never tried in the third row of a 7 seater but they don't seem too massive.

Why do you want the kids in row 3? Surely makes it awkward getting in and out on every journey?

Should have been clearer. For most of the time, they will be in the middle row in the ISOFIX seats.

However, on long journeys/holidays when we're travelling with a set of grandparents, it would make more sense to have the kids in the 3rd row and adults up front.

For occasional use, look at the Halfords basics high-back seats. Compact, light, comfortable, cheap and still way safer than pure booster seats. I've used one in the back of a 911.
