I've been importing cars for a number of years and privately selling on eBay / auto trader along side working full time.

I've sourced a couple of cars over the years for friends and family usually in the region of 10-20k.

Often 10 or so years old, predominantly Right hand drive.

Keen to scale it up, the more cars the better the shipping rate and most importantly competitive prices.

Is this something you as seasoned car buyers would look at? Often negative myths surround imported cars.

Would love to earn a living sourcing cars for clients. Any feedback much appreciated.

There's companies already doing it as far as Japanese imports especially are concerned so it's not a new concept.

The companies that are doing it do it along side their own business of importing cars to retail.

I imagine it's quite a niche market

My issue would be that I’d want to be going via a reputable importer with a proven track record - but how do you get that without people giving you a chance?
The financial implications could also be significant, what happens when someone asks you to source a six-figure car, are you expecting them to give you the cash upfront or are you financing it yourself? What protection is there to prevent you being taken for a ride?

In the real world, the people who are willing to pay for cars to be sourced are either wanting Japanese cars (for which there are a few well established importers) or it’s people wanting something truly special that has a price tag to match. I just think it’s too niche to make any money unless you’re already a respected individual via other means

I remember a firm called Manchester Car Imports going bust in a big way in the mid 70's.

Good luck.

I'm after an F32 BMW 440i Coupé with a particular spec. It would have to be a UK car though. Your challenge would be finding out who owns one in the UK - I imagine that kind of information would be locked down by GDPR - and then persuading them to sell it.

I imported a car from Japan with Autospecs 15 years ago. If I wanted another one, I'd go back to Autospecs first, because I trust them. Otherwise I'd go with another long-established and respected importer where I've seen other people's cars from.

As another posted said, it's quite a big trust game (sending a lot of money to the other side of the world and trusting you'll get a car that's as described show up at the port months later), and it seems it would be a difficult market to break into for that reason, unless you're doing something different / better than other importers.

You can say that again hehe. Would love too but not enough hours in the day to satisfy current client base bizarre demands. Maybe OP will take you up on it, you can be their first commission!

What watch are you after? In my full-time role I'll do work with a successful watch dealer.
