Totally stuck on decisioning so looking for some other perspectives. Looking at a "new" old used car i can run down for 5-6 years or so and narrowed it down to these two. Both are pretty high mileage but excellent service history done my homework and i'm using specs models i'd love to own i know there are probably better cars with different brands (open to hearing reccomendations). The only real difference is size and price and some features. I need something that will do good motorway runs. Which is the better buy/more reliable for the time frame i'm hoping for i know used cars can still be a lottery but giving myself the best chance.. Both same colour and love how both drive both smooth no noticeable rattles or sounds!

The BMW is a 320d luxury 2014 84k mileage Immaculate bmw dealer service history at every 10,000 miles or less 9 services 8 had oil changes. Sold by aa approved dealer providing servicing and aftercare after sale and has all the toys. £9k. i just worry about that n47 engine and timing chain. But have great peace of mind from the seller after care services. aa warranty and will service for me annually after sale with indy links and trade prices. If the chain starts rattling they will swap it for 900-1100 in the aftercare as i voiced my concern about the n47 engine. This would also be covered by the warranty potentially if it were needed.

The Jag looks like it had slightly less service The Jag is a head turner 110k beautiful 3l v6 2010 lux 2 owners good service history not as squeaky clean it did about 93k from 2011 -2015 and the service log reports only 4 services all with jag or indy specialists (i'm guessing they serviced every year over mileage). Then since it's had a service every 10k with it's new owner. Cam belt and gearbox done at 108k. doesn't have all the toys of the bmw like the sun roof and heated seats or reversing cam (it does have sensors though) (it's a luxury model not lux premium that's why). Price is £4500. So for half the price i get nearly as much car. The dealer seems dodgy it is a standard rubbish 2 month warranty so i'm thinking with the money i save i can take it to a jag indy have it checked out and keep up regularly servicing at an indy to maintain longevity. I'm just not as sure what i'm getting in terms of surprise bills and overall health of vehicle as i am with the bmw.

if it was your money your choice with that in mind what would you go for or suggest? My budget is about £9k i'd rather buy second hand well looked after than pcp a new one.

It’s probably not the advice you want but I wouldn’t buy either. The N47 is a very unreliable engine. I had 2 friends ask my advice on buying one. Both ignored it, both N47s failed. Re the Jag I don’t think they can be trusted to make a reliable car based on Escy’s thread.

What he said ∆
If you must buy a 3 series diesel at least go for the 330d that had a pretty good reputation.

Avoid keeping any n47 engined bmw long term far safer find a 3.0d version also nicer to drive and 100 x less likely to fail unlike the 2.0d

Thanks guys good to know any suggestions of similar cars that will be easy to come across get me up and down lengthy motorway trips and is nice inside. Interior is important which is why i picked these as i want to be in something nice for long periods of time

Assuming your requirement doesn't include a large boot, how about one of the last Lexus GS450H for between half and two thirds of your budget.

If you must have a beemer look for a 330d. You can actually get into a euro-6 compliant F31 with the N57 for the top of your budget. If you don't mind white. I don't think this is an ex-police car as the spec looks decent and it is non x-drive as a bonus!

I don't like either of your current candidates (sorry!)

The c220d from that era will give plenty of poke/economy
Wont be as engaging to drive which is the compromise.

Alternatively, as pointed out above, I'd be tempted by a lexus

The 3.0 V6TDCI in the xf is one of the best diesels ever fitted to a Jaguar. Second only to the Ford derived 2.2 TDCI in terms of reliability and longevity. Personally, I'd probably go with the XF and then throw some cash fixing any neglect. My partner owns one very similar to that one, except hers is a Premium Luxury, and the only thing that's been wrong with it was the OSF and OSR door latches needed replacing. They were done by the seller, so no cost to her. Since then, she's done about 15k miles, including our Remembrance weekend run to Thiepval for the service.

I would however probably not look at diesel at all, with the way things are I'd be looking for a V6 or V8 petrol.

I wouldn't put too much value in the AA approved branding of the dealership and the AA warranty. I made a claim on the warranty many years ago and it was limited to £1000 per claim and I had to pay out the money and claim it back afterwards.
The garage I used which was a good local one helped me out with the claim but they weren't too keen on dealing with the warranty company.

All the AA approved branding means is the garage have paid to put the AA association onto their stock.

All that being said the BMW might be very good and of the two that's what i'd choose but i'd much rather have a 330

Assuming you are not going into London or other major cities as the XF will not be Euro 6, is the BMW?
I had an N47 F11 2012 plate that I took to 200K miles no issues. Post about 2010 BMW had done a lot to fix issues and if worried get the chain swapped.
Wouldn't buy that XF, no heated seats!. I'd take an XF over a 3 series every time especially 3l vs 2l. Petrol bettter. I'd also go 5 series over 3 Series for comfort. No details re mileage? Petrol is good if not putting on the miles?

Thanks everyone some great points all round and i actually managed to find a 330d touring which i went with instead. Cheaper to tax, run and maintain. No denying the jag xf 3 litre would be a good choice as well but not ulez and i previously had a rr evoque that had some many unexpected niggles especially electricals. I fear jag would burn a bit more of a hole in the pocket with garage trips and services.
