Looking for a used crossover as the family run around. Need a petrol auto - shortlisted the Sportage, Tucson, Qashqai et al but the overwhelming favourite has been the Mazda CX-30 - looks, built quality, equipment, cabin design, all top notch. Flies under the radar too - not many around.

Haven't driven one yet though. Before doing so any views on the 2 engines? The Skyactiv G has 120bhp, the more sophisticated "X" which features diesel like compression ignition has 160 bhp. Youtube reviews don't help - some say the G is too weedy, others say the X needs revving to see any difference so you may as well save money and go for the 120 G.

Any views on either engine or the CX 30 as a package? Appreciate any input. Cheers!

You can remap 'G' to 165bhp, but it will still need revs to make progress.

The CX-30 is not large on the inside. Feels like a car from the class below. Bear this in mind.

However the interior is lovely, Mazda about as good as it gets when it comes to quality feel.

Their engines lack the bottom end grunt of the turbo lumps you have in most European cars. And the economy is not as good either. But at least you'll have a proper slushbox so if your priority is smooth progress you will be fine. G should be quieter, X smacks of a solution in search of a problem...

I'd also consider a Toyota or Honda hybrid if you want an auto. Also good for smooth progress but better on fuel around town.

I have a CX5 with 163bhp sykactiv G , seem to get more car for not a lot more money with a CX5 over the CX-30. I would say the petrol engine is OK and fine for my purpose but does not feel like it has 163bhp compared to a small turbo engine with lots of torque.

I do like the CX30 though , have a test drive my gut feeling is go for the G lower power model with the proven G engine as even the X model will not feel quick. It a well proven Mazda engine been running in all models for several years now .

My wife had a CX5 Sky activ G with the 2.5l, 194hp engine. I’m not sure if this is available in the UK.

It was a fantastically well equipped car, and very comfortable, smooth drive.

However, it was gutless and Mazda petrol engines are in my view, inefficient.

We’ve replaced it with a Toyota Corolla, which feels no less powerful, despite having ‘only’ 140hp, and a CVT. It is almost twice as efficient, has less than half the C02 emissions, and is packed with useful driver aids.

We do miss the HUD and 360-degree view, from the Mazda, which were super useful.

I have the Skyactiv X with Auto, it's lovely inside as you say but very cramped in the back, fine for us but do check before you commit. As for the engine, the 'X' is hardly going to set your pants on fire, I can't imagine how the 'G' would feel. Fuel consumption is low 40's on mixed local, county and motorway driving. A very good car but would be so much better with a turbo and around 220 bhp.

Go for the X if you can afford it.

I have a Mazda3 . On my second now both with the Skyactiv X.
The first a 2020 felt a bit flat but my new one is 2022 which has the revised engine (badged E Skyactiv X) which came out in 2021 is much better. The new one is averaging 44mpg. I can get nearly 50 on motorway run which I think is pretty decent for a petrol 2 litre. I put 50k miles on the first one and the new one is on 7k miles.
I tried the G but it felt really flat.
The X is definitely worth the extra. The Old X was 177bhp the new one is 183.

I'm having this exact dilemma.

I test drove the CX30 today, great spec on the exclusive model, and the drive was really good for what it is. The one I drive today was the G model, it felt perfectly capable of doing what I wanted, but couldn't get the opportunity to try it on a fast road as the A3 was slow moving,

I don't do massive amounts of motorway driving but wonder if I'd regret going for the lower spec engine. Currently doing loads of reviews

If it's just around town you won't notice the difference on a run you will notice the lack of torque both need revs to get going but that's the trade of in having a N/A engine.
