I currently own a 2017 Mini Cooper S which I bought back in March. Loved having it but with a child on the way in the new year I feel that I need a bigger vehicle. Due to the current cost of living crisis, I am not wanting to spend a fortune but want to get as much bang for my buck as I can.

My budget will be upto £10k and I have seen a couple of Passat estates which I like. The cars I’m looking at are 2016/2017 models of the 2.0 tdi variant.

I have seen a 2016 Passat estate business edition with 110k on the clock which looks good. 2 previous owners and full history including cam belt change.

I would plan on keeping the car for at least 3 years.

Anyone had any experiences with sub 100k miles 2.0 tdi ? Also any common issues with the passat ?

Thanks

Most common thing we see are cambelt failing, glow plugs, shock absorbers and springs.

I just bought (today) a 2011 as a present for a friend with 204k miles. Had a cam belt at 180k. Drives really well. Great Indy dealer too. 58 mpg on the way home. Felt like a comfy pair of slippers.

If it's had those things done over the years then it's probably a good purchase since it's been used as a mile muncher

Yep, although the shocks still only seem to last 40k.

Thanks for the responses. I had a couple of golfs before and remember every single one of them had sweating shocks. I feel that the Passat is great value and a lot of car for the money.

My other option is a 5 series touring 2014-2016. I do love a 5 series but the euro compliant ones seem really expensive. For the same money could get a 2017 Passat compared to a 2014/2015 5 series.

Anyone done the same thing as I’m thinking about and bought a higher mileage VAG diesel ?

For the bmw you want the b47 engine, it can still have chain issue but not as bad as the n47. The manual Mondeo isn’t bad, we look after one that’s approaching 270k that’s a 16 plate.

Can we be your fourth friend that you buy a Passat for?

Consider Skoda Superb estates as well The same platform as the Passat. I've had a 2018 Superb from new. Other than the rear discs being made of cheese I can't fault it. With today's car prices it is hard to believe I got a new Superb, with a few options, and first two services free for £18k

It isn't a car for driving fast on twisty roads but very comfortable and huge inside . One of my option was the fold flat front seat. With it folded I can carry 3.2M timbers inside the car.

Mine is the 1.4Tsi petrol. 150BHP Performance is adequate. Gets 47mpg on motorways and 52mph on A road driving.

I had a mk5 gt tdi, that was on over 160k when I sold it and no issues. I was looking last night as I need to make a similar move and there’s loads of passats with 180k+ for sale so that says something. As always regular servicing is key

I wouldn't say it's a bad idea but there are some better options out there.

Something that sits between the Mini & Passat would be the Focus ST tdci they're a very good car with lots of space with a decent amount of go:

No idea why that happened. Old IPad maybe. Seen lots of double posts but a triple?

Friend is mother of grandson. She has very little and asks for nothing.

Had two high mileage Passats before and almost forgotten how good they are. Bits for them seem cheap and plentiful. This one was a little over £2k but didn’t remotely feel like ‘poor relation’ driving it back. They do munch the miles well.

A year or so older than your spec with a years more mileage , but

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310233...

Years and years left in it. Plenty on sale are newer with 220+ miles or older with much less miles, but this seemed an ok balance for you to think about.

I have the previous version Passat (2013) - its hit 145k now and drives fine.

Had consumables obviously - cambelt/water pump done recently with some front bushes, other than that one spring and clutch/flywheel. That turned out to be a defect rather than wear and tear.

Still drives well - starting to get a bit sloppy mind as its been used as a mule over 5-6 years. But just keeps trucking on, genuinely dont know what I would replace it with. It was also dirt cheap at the time as it was dieselgate era.

Why would you only buy one spring? Surely you'd change the pair & top mounts at the same time.
