Having heard some stories about poor reliability years ago with the 2.2 toyotas and lexus, does anyone know if they sorted the issues over the years?

Looking specifically at a 64 2015 Rav4 with the 2.2 diesel.

Thanks

My first post, I had to join and reply! I have just bought a 2011 Rav4 2.2 dcat automatic after much research into diesel automatics, after coming from a Freelander 2. I wanted something that would give me less repairs and peace of mind. Much research with certain parameters such as towing ability and car length and foremost of all, led me to the Rav4 with this drivetrain. The worry was, as you as you asked was reliability.
The main fly in the ointment was the head gasket stories. From researching it, the problem was addressed by Toyota in the 2010 onwards model year. There have been no subsequent issues so far that I have read of and no other major reliability issues reported.
The later model year and body style, that you asked about has the same drivetrain and engine, with a bigger boot, spare wheel well and 'proper' vertically opening boot. A very good car in my opinion and one that will be practical, reliable and last well.
Love Blacklist too, an excellent character Red.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate you joining just for this thread!!

That's great to know, I couldn't find much online, I guess people are very vocal when things go wrong, but not so much when everything works as it should.

I've put down a deposit to reserve one that I've found, viewing and test drive tomorrow morning, so I'll report back afterwards. Very much looking forward to it. I'm hoping it's just what we need, useful, roomy and reliable transport for us, the dog and baby, plus all associated stuff that comes with them!

How has your fuel economy been so far? I've seen some information to suggest it isn't brilliant - the one I'm looking at is the manual so this may help slightly, AWD which probably wont help. Not overly concerned, but intrigued to know what it is in the real world.

No problem, it was a pleasure to help. Fuel economy varies from 32 around the lanes up to 40+ mpg at 65 to 75mph, not my usual speeds, though...
Given our mileage is 10k pa, not bothered, though, as I sleep better with a Toyota on the driveway!
Hope the test drive goes well.

That seems pitiful! eek

I just got home from a 400+ mile round trip in a 3 litre petrol that averaged 34mpg.

My BMW 123d averaged 48.7mpg over 81K miles.

You'd have to be a Toyota fan!

Yes and no really, I suppose. Four wheel drive SUV versus saloon will always lose and the lower figure was for short journeys at low speeds, not the best for a diesel. Motorway 400+ miles journeys could be made to show 48mpg but I was trying to be honest and realistic as to my experience.

If this is the same 2.2d engine found in the Lexus IS220d, then it is extremely uneconomical. My Father-in-law has his IS from 2010 to August this year.

Apart from consumables, nothing went wrong until the car died just outside Carlisle when the engine was starved of oil due to the oil pick up becoming gunked up, resulting in the need for a replacement engine. He sold it to a local garage who were going to do this. He had it serviced every year so the oil was good, so maybe worth checking the oil pick up is clear if you buy one.

Lexus did not get the updated engine, but discontinued the diesel at that year, I believe.
Agree the fuel consumption could be better, but the lower depreciation of a twelve year old car offsets the cost for me. Loving it so far, after a set of Michelin CrossClimates transformed the handling and noise from the older tyres on it.

Very odd..I dont recognise those mpg.

our 2007 2.2 diesel RAV4 averagee 45-46 mpg overall, inc lots of urban, but on long distances will be in tbe 50's. Managed to average 65mpg once driving back like a saint from Ledds castle in kent via motorways...

This is the 134bhp non cat version (ie just d4d, not DCAT.

Dying alternator has been the only reliability issue we've had in the 8 years weve owned it.

Fair enough.. hadn't appreciate there was that much a difference pre and post catalytic converter (and yes.. ours is manual too).

Neither pre DCAT or post are ULEZ compliant, so is going for the older version an option? Appreciate they are all getting on a bit now (ours is 16 years old)

HiAsAKite, OP is getting 2015 model for his needs, unsure of ULEZ requirements.

Mr Reddington, we look forward to the post test-drive analysis!

Fair point.

At least I haven't (in true ph style) suggested an mx5. Or remapped 335d ;-)

I had an 08 Toyota Verso 2.2 d4d for 10 years and drove it from 60,000 to 150,000 miles. I serviced it every year and it was very reliable.
I do a fair bit of town driving and it averaged 40mpg but would do over 50mpg on a long run.
I would have no hesitation getting another Toyota with this engine.

Yeah it’s well sorted out after 2010. The 2.2 has more torque than the 2.0 but sucks more diesel too especially in automatic form. Usual diesel things to watch ie dpf/short journeys etc.
